Fairly strong carrier but very low modulation and barely audible by 1415
UT due to low modulation which just got weaker and weaker. Not heard next
day, Jan 14.

with on-air phone calls and playing pop songs in EG (Dionne Warrick/Elton

Island mx and singing/chanting, TC's, several mentions of "Solomon
Islands," 1234 clear ID for "Radio Bouganville" followed by sound of a
conch horn, into prgm of American C&W songs ("Cotton Fields Back Home,"
etc). Reception was fair to poor. Reception possible due to complete
absence of RRI Palangkaraya (Indonesia).

3205 Radio Sandaun Vanimo w/ best ever armchair-level signal here on 1/14
with several ID's/mentions of "Sandaun" (probably means "Sundown" in
Pidgin). Played a variety of local and pop mx with a man announcer from
1045 tune to past 1135. NBC nx feed in EE by man at 1101.5 to 1104.5 fol
by an IS and ID and freq anmt. Into more variety mx at 1105. This station
is not often hrd well here. SINPO 45444.

PORTUGAL [and non]. Re item on SPAIN:
Reading the article on how Spain seems to be dealing with the antennae
left on site by RFE/RL in Playa de Pals, reminds me of the Portuguese
counterpart, operated by RARET at Gloria do Ribatejo and also Maxoqueira
[mashookayra]. The Gloria site was granted by the then Portuguese govt
along with one 50 kW tx, and - to my knowledge - the antennae are still
there; at least they were when I visited the place back in March, 2002, as
I think to remember.
As I reported at the time, the Maxoqueira complex was erected on grounds
of a welfare organization and it seems everything had to be removed and
left without trace, so I was told. Besides that, there was also the
receiving site, at Benavente, and the head office in a building not far
from where I live (the tower and the link dishes were removed).
Like in Spain, the "fairies" behind RFE/RL managed "switch the lights off"
just like that, leaving behind a number or jobless personnel (they did so
here), all with or without the blessing of the respective govts, but not
before "squeezing the juice" first, i.e. taking the txs with them.
Demolition and junk removal is therefore needed... at a cost for the
Spanish taxpayers. I feel the "juice" should have been "bottled and stored
away" by the local authorities until adequate handling of the grounds took
place at the full expense of the above mentioned "fairies."
