so a good narrative is possible is to: “watch as many movies
as you can” (Id., 1999:1).
4 - Innovative editing and publication methods
At the beginning of Chapter 10 of his book “Journalism
2.0”, Mark Briggs tells us that: “you can use a cheap, free and
easy to find software to insert images in non-linear stories” (Id.,
2007:102).
When we talk about editing we mustn’t forget that the
editing process is related to the selection of certain aspects of
an event and organizing them in a meaningful manner.
“Basically: we edit to tell a story with clarity and impact” (Zettl,
2000:291).
According to Gerald Millerson, when we edit during this
process we need to decide the following issues (Id.,
1999:171):
- Which camera shots are needed to tell my story?
- What is the desired sequence for my video/movie
content?
- In which sequence do I cut or mix (through
dissolve) the transition between two shots? Will
give me the desired effect on my story?
- Will there be good continuity between my shots and
the sound it has?
- Is there a need for special effects in my video?
- What is the final order of the shots?
According to Zettl, the principal editing functions are:
“combining program portions”, “condensing the overall length
of the material”, “correcting production mistakes” and “building
a narrative from the recorded shots” (Id., 2000:293).
But what type of connections can be achieved through
the editing process? Steven Katz tells us that there are:
“Temporal Connections – the cut is made from on moment to
the other”; “Spatial Connections – there’s a cut from a wide
shot of a subject to a closer shot”; “Logical Connections –
when there’s no need of spatial or temporal connections” (Id.,
