The special examples of a Gaussian and a shell wave function allow us to
perform the calculations analytically. We find that the entanglement of
formation and the negative parts of the Wigner function decrease with
the number of dimensions.
“Squashed Entanglement” – An Additive Entanglement Measure
We present a new entanglement monotone for bipartite quantum
states. Its definition is inspired by the so–called intrinsic information
of classical cryptography and is given by the halved minimum quantum
conditional mutual information over all tripartite state extensions. We
derive certain properties of the new measure which we call “squashed
entanglement”: it is a lower bound on entanglement of formation and
an upper bound on distillable entanglement. Furthermore, it is convex,
additive on tensor products, and superadditive in general.
Continuity in the state is the only property of our entanglement measure
which we cannot provide a proof for. We present some evidence,
however, that our quantity has this property, the strongest indication
being a conjectured Fannes type inequality for the conditional von Neumann
entropy. This inequality is proved in the classical case.
Concurrence of mixed bipartite quantum states in arbitrary
dimensions — •Florian Mintert 1 , Marek Kus 2 , and Andreas
We consider the concurrence of mixed bipartite quantum states and
derive an approch that leads to a lower bound for the considered quantity
valid in arbitrary dimensions. This implies a weaker, purely algebraic
estimate which detects mixed entangled states with positive partial transpose.
Decay time of waveguide-plasmon polaritons in metallic photonic
crystal slabs — •Thomas Zentgraf 1 , Jürgen Kuhl 1 , Franz
The coupling between a particle plasmon resonance and an optical
waveguide mode leads to a strong modification of the optical response.
In the case of interaction of these two resonances, a new quasiparticle
(waveguide-plasmon polariton) is formed. In the present work, the decay
time of particle plasmons in a planar metallo-dielectric photonic crystal
slab structure (PCS) is investigated. We deposited gold nanodiscs with
a diameter of 150 nm and a height of 21 nm by electron-beam lithography
on a 100-nm-thick tantalum-dioxide (TaO2) slab waveguide. For
measuring the particle plasmon decay time in the time domain, we used a
second-order interferometric autocorrelation method. The measurement
was performed with 13 fs pulses from a home-built Ti:Sapphire laser.
By comparison of the measured autocorrelation function with the simulations
based on a damped harmonic oscillator model it is possible to
extract the decay time of the particle plasmon oscillation. When changing
the coupling strength between the particle plasmon and the waveguide
mode, we observe a polariton beating and a prolonged plasmon decay
time.
The capability of an antenna to capture energy from a radiation field
and concentrate it on a small volume shall be exploited for nano-optics
and near-field optical microscopy. Plasmon resonances distinguishes optical
antennas from their radiowave counterparts and result in a very
high field enhancement for appropriate geometries. These and a variety
of other new effects, for instance a strong optical trapping capability, are
attracting more and more attention within the field of nanoscale science
and technology. First basic antenna structures are realized on flat glass
substrates by means of e-beam and focused-ion-beam lithography. We
started optical near-filed measurements to characterize the field distribution
around the antenna structures for comparison of some properties
with expectations based on established antenna theory and numerical
optical antenna simulations.
Wachstum in [111]-Richtung festgestellt.
Y2O3 and (Lu/Sc)2O3 thin films grown by thermal evaporation
on α-Al2O3 — •Lutz Rabisch, Sebastian Bär, and Günter
α-Al2O3 is an approved material in optical technology. Efficient laser
operation in rare-earth doped Y2O3 has been demonstrated. Layer systems
of both materials combine the crystal properties and enable the
fabrication of crystalline coatings and active and passive waveguides.
We report on the growth of Eu:Y2O3- and Eu:(Lu/Sc)2O3 thin films (2-
500 nm) on α-AL2O3 by electron beam evaporation. The crystal structure
of the films was analysed by XRD and Surface XRD. The measurements
