Cs-137 IN SEDIMENTS OF LAGO MAGGIORE: MEA-
SUREMENTS AND MODELING — •Victoria Putyrskaya 1,2 ,
Sediment and water samples were taken in May and November 2003
at two different basins of Lago Maggiore. A study of the vertical Cs-
137 distribution in water and sediment and of water parameters enables
us to get an idea on the present radiological situation, and of the sorption
and migration processes within the sediment. To get information on
the association of radionuclides to the different geochemical fractions sequential
extraction experiments were performed. Our model is a system
of two coupled partial differential equations. It is based on sedimentationdiffusion
equations and describes the input of Cs-137 into the sediment
and its vertical distribution within the sediment, and it takes also into
account fixation and redissolution processes as well as radioactive decay.
The concentration of competing ions is used to modify the distribution
coefficient Kd. Also the compaction of sediments with depth will be taken
into account. To solve this system a finite element method is used. Results
for different lakes will be compared to the parameters of Lago Maggiore.
DATING OF YENISEI SEDIMENTS USING Po-210 ALPHA-
SPECTROSCOPY — •Hanna Paliachenka, Eckehard Klemt,
and Gregor Zibold — Fachhochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten,
Doggenriedstr., D-88250 Weingarten
In 1999 and 2001 sediment samples were taken from various locations
in the river Yenisei in central Sibiria and the vertical distribution of radionuclides
was determined. Gamma-spectrometric dating of sediment
layers of the river is not possible using the standard Pb-210 method
(46.5 keV) due to the emission of 46.6 keV X-rays of the omnipresent
Eu-152. Therefore, as Pb-210 and Po-210 (T1/2 = 138 d) are in radioactive
equilibrium we extract only the unsupported Po-210 which is then
measured alpha-spectrometrically. In this way systematic uncertainties
due to the subtraction of concentrations determined by different methods
are avoided. The results of these measurements are compared to other
methods of dating using various isotope ratios and to the outcome of a
model which describes the vertical distribution of radionuclides in the
sediment.
On the campus of the Forschungszentrum Jülich we constructed
SAPHIR(Simulation of Atmospheric PHotochemistry In a large
Reaction Chamber) which consists of a 280-m 3 double-wall Teflon bag
of cylindrical shape that is held by a steel frame. Typically 75% of the
outside actinic flux (290 nm – 420 nm) is available inside the chamber. A
louvre system allows switching between full sun light and dark within 40s
giving the opportunity to study relaxation processes of the photo chemical
system. The SAPHIR chamber is equipped with a comprehensive set
of sensitive instruments including the measurements of OH, HO2, CO,
hydro-carbons, aldehydes, nitrogen-oxides and solar radiation. Moreover,
the modular concept of SAPHIR allows fast and flexible integration of
new instruments and techniques. In this paper we will show the unique
and new features of the SAPHIR chamber, namely the clean air supply
and high purity water vapor supply providing a wide range of trace gas
concentrations being accessible through the experiments. We will also
present examples from SAPHIR experiments showing the scope of application
from high quality instrument inter-comparison and kinetic studies
to the simulation of complex mixtures of trace gases at ambient concentrations.
Geosphäre (ICG-II: Troposphäre), Forschungszentrum Jülich
Am Forschungzentrum Jülich kann die Konzentration von OH-
Radikalen unter atmosphärischen Bedingungen mit zwei hochempfindlichen
Messmethoden bestimmt werden: Laser-Langweg-DOAS (differentielle
optische Absorptionsspektroskopie mit Vielfachreflektionszelle)
und LIF (laser-induzierter Fluoreszenz nach Gasexpansion). Beide Messmethoden
In diesem
Temperature Dependence of Ozone Isotopomer Formation —
Oxygen isotope effects in the formation of ozone, O+O2+M → O3+M,
are unconventional and very large, thus offering a unique atmospheric
tracer for atmospheric oxidation involving ozone. Presently, a complete
and undisputed understanding of these isotope effects is not available, but
differences of zero point energy (ZPE) in the assciation and dissociation
of excited ozone are suggested to play a pivotal role.
Here, the results of an improved experimental study of the ozone isotope
anomaly are presented. This kinetic study extends earlier room
temperature measurements towards the low temperature range of atmospheric
interest (233 - 353 K). The technique of molecular beam mass
spectrometry (MBMS) has been employed to unravel the relative temperature
dependence of 6 out of 36 possible isotopic reactions.
The observed temperature dependence substantiates the role of ZPE
for isotopomer fractionation in ozone formation and further completes the
understanding of the combined pressure and temperature dependence of
atmospheric ozone isotopomer enrichments.
