eveal polycrystalline growth of the Y2O3 films on an initially amorphous
interfacial layer. In contrast the (Lu/Sc)2O3 films show polycrystalline
growth with an obvious epitaxial texture.
Emission spectra reveal that the local symmetry of the Eu centers
within the (Lu/Sc)2O3 films is identical to the bulk material whereas the
Y2O3 films have slightly modified spectra. All films thinner then roughly
10 nm show broadened emission lines. In contrast the fluorescence of a 3
nm Eu:Y2O3 film buried under an Al2O3 coating layer is identical to the
bulk spectrum.
Spatial optical solitons are of interest due to their ability for selfadjustable
waveguiding and versatile interaction capabilities like lightinduced
Y and X couplers. However, these investigations were up to
now limited to single solitons. Here we investigate theoretically and experimentally
the behavior of large two-dimensional lattices of solitons
and their waveguiding capabilities. In such a case, neighboring solitons
may experience repulsion or attraction depending on phase-dependent
coherent as well as separation-dependent incoherent interactions. Lattices
composed out of incoherent solitons were found to be more stable
than lattices with coherent in-phase solitons for identical conditions. We
use the manipulation of phase across the lattice to achieve closer packing
while maintaining propagation without interaction. Further we show the
interaction of different beams with the lattice.
Vector Solitons, i.e. multicomponent light beams that jointly self-trap
in nonlinear media, have been the subject of extensive research in the
field of spatial optical solitons. Almost all investigations have been done
in copropagating configurations of the light beams. Recently, attention
has been drawn to the formation of vector solitons by counterpropagating
light fields, which promise qualitatively new behavior, including temporal
dynamics [1].
We present results of two-dimensional experimental investigations of
different configurations of counterpropagating fields in a photorefractive
strontium-barium-niobate crystal (SBN). We demonstrate a variety of solutions
for two counterpropagating gaussian beams, ranging from steady
state solutions to temporal dynamics wih periodic or quasiperiodic behavior.
We show trapping of a dipole-mode beam by a counterpropagating
gaussian beam, forming a single counterpropagating soliton. Our experiments
confirm the theoretical notion that no qualitative difference exists
between mutually coherent and incoherent light beams. Good qualitative
agreement with numerical investigations of the model is shown.
Higher-order vectorial solitons and compound states in a singlemirror
feedback system — •Matthias Pesch, Edgar Große
Westhoff, Thorsten Ackemann, and Wulfhard Lange — Institut
für Angewandte Physik, Corrensstr. 2/4, 48149 Münster, Germany
In this report, we consider vectorial spatial solitons in a specific realization
of a single-mirror feedback scheme. The nonlinear medium is sodium
vapor driven by linearly polarized light. A λ/8-retardation plate is placed
in the feedback loop. This system shows symmetry-breaking between spatially
homogeneous elliptically polarized states of opposite helicity[1]. At
some pump level both of these homogeneous branches become unstable
against a modulation instability[2].
In a parameter region near this bifurcation point, we observe three
different types of localized states. They rely on polarization effects and
differ from each other in the number of radial oscillations. They can be
switched on and off by injecting a focused address pulse of suitable polarization
and spatial shape into the medium. We interpret them as the
first members of a family of vectorial solitons of n-th order. Different configurations
of coexisting solitons as well as compound states consisting of
tightly bound single solitons are observed. Numerical simulations show a
good agreement with the experimental results.
Peri-
