In
HBT in nanoscaled zeolite: Intrazeolite Femtochemistry — •Uli
Nanosized periodic structures of zeolites loaded with photoreactive
molecules have a great potential in optoelectronics and the design of
functional materials. The investigation of the photochemistry of such
host guest systems, that frequently show strong interaction, requires a
resolution down to the femtosecond time scale. This is hard to achieve in
extended bulk samples.
We report on the photochemical behavior of 2-(2’-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole
(HBT) in FAU zeolite and demonstrate that the use of
a nanoscaled colloidal suspension allows to perform pump-probe experiments
without restriction in time resolution. HBT was incorporated during
the synthesis of FAU in the presence of the template tetramethylammonium
hydroxide (TMA) [1]. The inclusion appears to involve an
interaction between the TMA ions and HBT leading to a modification
of HBT. The normal enol groundstate is replaced by the trans-keto conformation.
Unlike the enol form this isomer shows strong fluorescence
around 470 nm. Transient measurements reveal an increase of this emission
within 1.5 ps and a decay time of 4 ns. The spectral position and
the decay time identify the emissive state as the anion of HBT, formed
by excited state proton transfer to the solvent.
Hydrogen bond dynamics in Salicylaldimine after an excitation of the
OH bending/stretching vibration with an ultrafast IR laser pulse is studied,
using a 7-dimensional CRS [1] model comprising the large amplitude
H-atom motion and five normal modes of the molecular scaffold. The
numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation was per-
53
formed employing the MCTDH approach [2]. Bending vibration: besides
the bending vibration the fundamental transition of highest frequency
scaffold mode is appreciably excited, so the dynamics is characterized by
a coherent wave packet motion. The remaining normal modes have also
been excited, but to a much lower extent. Stretching vibration: all modes
were noticably excited. Strong couplings lead to fast subpicosecond IVR
processes. During the pulse, most of the energy flows into the reaction
coordinates, but after the pulse has been turned off, the ehergy was redistributed
among all normal modes. The OD bending/stretching vibration
of the deuterated species has also been excited and a pronounced isotope
effect on the intramolecular energy flow was observed.
bestimmen.
Carotenoids play a crucial role as light-harvesting pigments in photosynthesis
and in the regulation of the energy flows in the photosynthetical
apparatus. In Light-harvesting complex II e.g., which collects more than
50 % of the light used for photosynthesis on earth, carotenoids contribute
about 30 % to this huge amount of collected energy. However, a detailed
insight in the underlying mechanisms was very often impossible due the
optical forbidden character of the first excited state of carotenoids, S1.
This is because it has the same Ag symmetry as the ground state, S0.
Therefore for many photosynthetical complexes there is still neither any
knowledge about the S1 state energies nor about the corresponding energy
transfer mechanisms. An elegant approach to gain more insight into
these questions is the investigation via 2-photon excitation because Ag-
Ag-transitions are generally 2-photon allowed. We present the results of
2-photon excitation spectra as well as Fs-2-photon pump-probe and Fs-
2-photon up-conversion experiments on Photosystem 1 of Synecochoccus
Elongatus and other photosynthetical protein complexes.
