Der Atomabstand im Helium-Trimer 4 He3 — G.C. Hegerfeldt
How to STIRAP a vortex — •Gerrit Nandi, Reinhold Walser,
and Wolfgang P. Schleich — Abteilung für Quantenphysik, Universität
Ulm, Germany
We examine an alternative scheme for the optical creation of a superfluid
vortex in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate ([2],[3]), using the
stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique [1]. By exposing
an oblate, axis-symmetric condensate to two co-propagating laser
pulses, one can transfer external angular momentum from the light field
to the matter wave, if one of the beams is the fundamental Gaussian mode
and the other is a Gauss-Laguerre mode of angular momentum m = 1.
We demonstrate the complete transfer efficiency by numerical integration
of the multi-component Gross-Pitaevskii equation and explain the
results with an intuitive and accurate approximation within the Thomas-
Fermi limit. In addition, we discuss residual excitations (breathing modes
[4]) that occur in the 2D regime and present the Bogoliubov excitation
spectrum.
Fast rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in nonharmonic traps
— •Sabine Stock, Vincent Bretin, Zoran Hadzibabic, and Jean
Dalibard — Laboratoire Kastler Brossel, Département de Physique de
l’ENS, 24 rue Lhomond, 75005 Paris, France
For rotating BECs in harmonic traps the rotation frequency is limited
by the trap frequency, above which the centrifugal force overcomes the
trapping force and the condensate‘s centre of mass is destabilized. From
a quantum mechanical point of view the single particle ground state first
becomes infinitely degenerate as the rotation frequency is increased, and
then seizes to exist. In traps steeper than harmonic, this problem can be
overcome so that the way to new regimes is opened.
In our experiment we produce condensates of 87Rb in a
quadratic+quartic transverse potential, so that the quartic potential
confines the condensate at all rotation frequencies. It was
therefore possible to achieve a fast rotation regime where the vortex
lattice becomes disordered and, for rotations faster than the trap
frequency, completely ”dissolves”.
These experiments represent a step towards regimes where a gas of ultra
cold bosons is placed in a potential with a highly degenerate ground
state. We plan to pursue this work towards regimes with much smaller
numbers of atoms, where effects analogue to the Quantum Hall Effect
might be observed.
Bright discrete solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates —
We analyze the conditions to generate bright discrete solitons either in
attractive or repulsive one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates under
realistic experimental conditions. In the case of positive scattering length
the phase imprinting method is used to reach the so called staggered configuration.
In this case the generation of solitons at finite temperature has
also been studied. Our results show that the typical size of the discrete
soliton allows its generation even in the presence of phase fluctuations.
Once generated, the mobility of these entities, established by the presence
of the Peierls-Navarro barrier on one hand and the width on momentum
of the soliton on the other, has been addressed. Motion in the linear
region is only possible if the soliton populates a number of sites large
enough to be localized in momentum space. The generation of localized
structures in higher dimensions than one is also reported.
In
