Experimente mit dem Ein-Atom Maser — •Thomas Becker,
Im Ein-Atom Maser kann die Quantenphysik der Licht-Materie Wechselwirkung
auf elementare Weise untersucht werden. Dabei durchqueren
Collective interference of N driven atomic dipoles with a high-
We study the dynamics of N coherently driven two-level atoms strongly
coupled to a high finesse optical resonator. Analogous to a single driven
atom in a lossless cavity [1], the quantum interference of the cavity mode
field and the pump field creates an intensity minimum in the vicinity of
each driven atom and suppresses spontaneous emission and light shift.
Even for strong driving fields the atoms are only weakly saturated and
the probe absorption spectra reveals the vacuum Rabi splitting. We find
that, even in the case of an empty-cavity linewidth bigger than the atomic
linewidth, one regains destructive interference through the cooperative
action of many atoms. Despite of opening more loss channels, cavity decay
becomes the dominant decay channel with growing atom number.
The magnitude of the effect shows a strong dependence on the relative
atomic distances being maximum for a regular lattice of atoms. Both of
these results can give a new key to understand recent experiments on
collective cavity cooling [2].
Könnte man
perfekt rekomprimieren, so würden Pulsdauern < 2fs resultieren.
Noise in phase-coherent supercontinua generated in microstructure
fibers — •Nils Haverkamp und Harald R. Telle
— Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Bundesallee 100, 38116
Braunschweig
We investigated the comlex intensity modulation transfer function for
supercontinuum (SC) generation in microstructure fibers (MSF), i.e. we
measured, how intensity fluctuations of pulses coupled into a MSF translate
into intensity and/or phase fluctuations in the fiber output spectrum.
For SC generation with pulse energies of some 200pJ in 120 mm of Lucent
MSF, we found intensity modulation gain factors not larger than
100, and nonlinear phase shifts not exceeding 40 rad per percent of pulse
energy change.
In future apllications, such as optical pulse synthesis and using a self
referenced frequency comb as an optical clock work for an optical frequency
standard, the short term stability depends on the magnitude of
intensity and/or phase fluctuations in the comb spectrum. We measured
the fluctuations induced by input pulse intensity fluctuations and show,
that our Ti:Sa-comb-generator can be used to transfer the short term sta-
bility of any optical frequency standard to any optical or radio/microwave
frequency with an instabilty of 10E-15 in one second.
Passive all-optical phase locking of two femtosecond Ti:sapphire
Two independently tunable femtosecond Ti:sapphire lasers are passively
synchronized with a stable relative carrier-envelope offset phase.
Heterodyning the spectral overlap of the frequency combs from the two
oscillators, we observe multiple regimes for the cavity length difference
where the relative round-trip phase slip is effectively locked to zero. The
phase-locking is also verified analyzing the combined optical spectrum of
the two laser pulse trains. The strong correlation of the femtosecond pulse
trains is maintained over minutes without any external stabilization and
relative cavity lenght variations of 50 nm are compensated. Cross-phase
modulation beyond the slowly varying amplitude picture is responsible
for the phase synchronization. This mechanism takes full advantage of
the nonresonant optical nonlinearity of the shared gain medium which is
much faster than the optical cycle.
We present experiments of photoionization of rare gases conducted
with phase-stabilized few-cycle laser pulses. The detected asymmetry of
electron emission in the two polarization directions (stereo-ATI) allowed
for the first time the unambiguous determination of the absolute phase of
the pulse [1] and its spatial variation along the laser focus (Gouy phase,
[2]).
Besides the use of the ATI-phasemeter as an essential tool for experiments
requiring long-term phase stability, more fundamental aspects of
the ionization process will be discussed. In particular, the electrons’ motion
under the driving laser field can be reconstructed with unprecedented
attosecond resolution.
