In this case the atoms can be treated as independent emitters. As for
resonance fluorescence in free space [2], both photon antibunching for
a single atom and bunching for many atoms are observed. If the cavity
decays more slowly, the atom-atom interaction via the cavity mode increases.
Provided that the pumping to the excited state is strong enough
to invert the system, a laser threshold is reached. The results of the theoretical
model are compared with experimental data [3,4].
How non-linearity makes condensate interferometers work
We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in timedependent
microtraps for the purpose of understanding the influence of
the mean field interaction on the performance of interferometers. We
show that the non-linearity in ultracold bosons increases the sensitivity
of interferometers to a phase shift, under some conditions. This feature
is connected with the adiabatic generation of a dark soliton. We analyze
the robustness of this phenomenon with respect to thermal fluctuations,
due to excited near fields in an electromagnetic surface trap.
unterscheiden. Bei einer longitudinalen Geschwindigkeit der Atome von
3 m/s ergibt sich z.B. eine Sensitivität von 2 × 10 −9 rad/s/ √ Hz.
Our experiment MAGIA (Misura Accurata di G mediante
Interferometria Atomica) aims at the high precision measurement of the
Newtonian gravitational constant G, which is the least accurately known
fundamental physical constant [1]. MAGIA will use the technique of
Raman atom interferometry to probe the acceleration of free falling
atoms within a Rb fountain. The modification of this acceleration due
to the gravitational potential of external source masses will be detected
in a double differential way [2] and used to assign a value to G. We
present the general idea of MAGIA and report on the current status of
the experiment.
Observation of Ultracold Ground-State Heteronuclear
Molecules — •G.D. Telles, M.W. Mancini, A.R.L. Caires, V.S.
Bagnato, and L.G. Marcassa — Instituto de Física de São Carlos,
We report the observation of translationally ultracold heteronuclear
ground-state molecules in a two species magneto-optical trap (MOT)
containing 39 K and 85 Rb atoms. The KRb molecules are produced via
photoassociation and detected by multiphoton ionization. We had characterized
their temperature and measured their formation rate constant.
We believe that the two species MOTs could be used as a reliable source
of ultracold molecules to be captured by electrostatic, magnetic or optical
traps. This possibility will certainly motivate further investigation of
119
quantum collective effects as well as high-resolution spectroscopy of the
rovibrational level structure of cold heteronuclear molecular systems.
We report on our current developments towards the detection of ultracold
polar LiCs molecules to be produced via photoassociation out of a
mixture of ultracold 7 Li and 133 Cs atoms. In a first step, photoassociation
spectroscopy has been performed on Cs2 in a quasi-electrostatic dipole
trap (QUEST) formed by a focussed 100 W CO2-laser beam. Detailed
