Polarization Entanglement with a Fiber-Sagnac Interferometer
The polarization state of light, described by the Stokes parameters,
has in recent years attracted much interest in the field of quantum optics
and communication. This is largely due to the fact that these parameters,
in contrast to the quadrature variables, can be measured directly
without local oscillator methods. Thus, this approach holds particular
promise for quantum cryptography. We report here on the results of an
experiment producing polarization entanglement using femtosecond laser
pulses at 1500 nm. The entanglement is generated by interfering a polarization
squeezed beam with an auxiliary beam. The polarization squeezed
beam consists of two phase matched, orthogonally polarized, amplitude
squeezed beams which are simultaneously produced using an asymmetric
fiber Sagnac interferometer with a polarization maintaining fiber. This
entanglement is compared and contrasted with previous results from this
experiment using a vacuum input in place of the auxiliary beam [1].
Experimental investigations aiming on the manipulation of the
sodium scattering length — •St. Falke, Chr. Samuelis, H.
Spectroscopy of dimers has been successfully applied to describe scattering
processes of the corresponding atoms by determining the scattering
length from molecular potentials[1]. This property can be modified
by magnetic fields in a controlled way[2], especially in the neighborhood
of Feshbach resonances. Moreover, this led to the coherent production of
ultra-cold molecules from quantum degenerate gases[3]. But, this tricky
approach cannot be applied for atoms with vanishing nuclear spin, e.g.,
many alkaline earth isotopes.
Having demonstrated the possible optically induced elimination of levels
of an electronic state correlated to the 3s+3p asymptote of Na2[4],
we now investigate a recipe for the manipulation of scattering lengths by
optical fields[5] in a Na2 beam experiment by systematically measuring
level shifts induced by a laser (off resonant from atomic transitions) on
weakly bound ground state levels.
Investigation of cold collisions by matter wave interferometry
method with K2 — •Ivan Sherstov, Matthias Frank, Christian
Matter wave interferometry with light-induced beam splitters is a very
powerful tool in high precision spectroscopy. Additionally, it is used to
investigate collisional properties in an atomic or molecular media like
matter wave index of refraction, scattering length etc. [1-2].
The main goal of our project is to investigate the precision of matter
wave interferometry in weak interaction applications like cold collisions or
weak external fields. We apply the matter wave interferometry to examine
”cold” collisions in the supersonic potassium beam between atoms and
molecules [3]. K2 molecules propagate through an atomic medium and
hence gain some additional phase shift due to cold collisions (the relative
velocity between atoms and molecules is about 20 m/s). By changing the
medium’s properties (like exciting K atoms to a higher electronic state
or varying the density of the atoms in the beam) we observe the change
of the phase of the interference patterns.
The phenomenon of Bloch oscillations (BOs) is usually discussed in the
context of electrons in semiconductor superlattices. Recently, BOs were
observed for cold atoms, loaded into an optical lattice. While most of
the experimental and theoretical work on atomic BOs deals with spinless
atoms, in this present work we address BOs of Fermi atoms. The analysis
is performed in terms of the 1D Hubbard model, where the relevant
parameters are the filling factors (average number of atoms per lattice
site) for spin-up and spin-down atoms.
