Damit erhält man Informationen
Remote sensing of droplet size distributions from high
resolution observations of the glory — •Bernhard Mayer 1 ,
The single scattering properties of clouds are mainly determined by the
effective radius of the droplet size distribution. There are only few exceptions
where the shape of the size distribution affects the optical properties,
in particular the rainbow and the glory directions of the scattering
phase function. Using observations by the Compact Airborne Spectrographic
Imager (CASI) in 180 ◦ backscatter geometry, we found that high
spatial resolution observations of the glory provide unique new information
which is not available from traditional remote sensing techniques:
Using only one single wavelength, 754 nm, we were able to determine not
only optical thickness and effective radius, but also the width of the size
distribution. Applying this technique to the ACE-2 CLOUDYCOLUMN
experiment, we found that the size distributions were much narrower than
previously suggested in the literature which is in agreement with in-situ
observations during this campaign. While the shape of the size distribution
has only little relevance for the radiative properties of clouds, it is
extremely important for understanding their evolution.
Wavelet covariance transform technique for boundary-layer top
determination from automatic lidar measurements — Dietrich
Althausen 1 and •Holger Baars 2 — 1 Institute for Tropospheric Research,
Leipzig, Germany — 2 University Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany
At the Institute for Tropospheric Research we developted a small Raman
lidar Polly (portable, automatic mini Raman lidar system) to perform
automatic, unattended measurements of particle backscatter and
extinction profiles. Because often the height of the planetary boundary
layer is needed for atmospheric pollution monitoring and modelling we
present investigations of the possibility to determine the boundary layer
top and/or the transition zone from Polly data. The wavelet covariance
transform technique is applied to the lidar backscatter profiles. A short
description of the Raman lidar Polly and the used data retrieval procedures
will be presented. The potential and the limits of the wavelet
covariance transform technique regarding boundary-layer top determination
will be discussed.
Aerosol simulation in radiative transfer modelling — •Sanghavi
Suniti, Christoph von Friedeburg, Thomas Wagner, and Ulrich
Platt — Institut fuer Umweltphysik, Heidelberg
Aerosols, through their different direct and indirect effects, play an
important role in atmospheric radiative transfer. They display a marked
degree of inhomogeneity in their occurence and properties, making it
important to classify them in detail. In this talk, we present the different
scenarios chosen to represent various aerosol species occuring in the
atmosphere within the framework of a three dimensional Monte Carlo
radiative transfer model. We discuss the sensitivity of the modelled retrievals
on the size distribution and vertical profile of the aerosols and
on their single scattering properties. The single scattering properties of
a given species are calculated using the Mie theory whose approximation
to nonspherical particles is discussed. Future possibilies to expand the
existing model to include nonspherical particles, to simulate 3D clouds,
etc. are investigated.
Homogeneous Nucleation of Supersaturated Droplets of NaCl
Homogeneous nucleation of aqueous sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions
and natural sea salt aerosol droplets is investigated using single, trapped
particles in an electrodynamic balance. The phase transition liquid-tosolid
is investigated as a function of temperature and humidity, where
the experimental conditions favor homogeneous nucleation. The enthalpy
of supersaturated NaCl- and solution droplets from the Mediterranean
Sea are derived as well as the rates of homogeneous nucleation. The results
indicate that the phase transition liquid-to-solid is related to the
salinity of seawater and the depth, where the samples were collected. It
is assumed that organic substances affect homogeneous nucleation of the
sea salt droplets. Therefore, we have investigated model solution droplets
containing NaCl, where organic substances were added. These are either
bound in the bulk or on the surface of the droplets. It is observed that
specific changes in homogeneous nucleation occur, if the amount of organic
species is varied.
