der L-Schale berylliumähnlicher B + -Ionen im Photonenenergiebereich
22.4–31.3 eV gemessen [2]. Die experimentelle Energieunschärfe betrug
25 meV.
A 10 Atomspektroskopie I
We use argon and potassium atoms as targets to study the interaction
with hard x-rays. Since potassium features only an additional valence
electron ([Ar]4s 1 electron configuration) with respect to argon, the ionization
dynamics of these two systems are comparable. We monitor the
modifications of the electron configurations in both atomic species by
measurements of ion yields of different charge states, following Auger
decay after k-shell excitation. In our setup, the atoms are excited with
0.5 to 0.7eV bandwidth x-rays in the energy range of 3.1 to 3.7keV. Our
apparatus consists of a time-of-flight spectrometer with pulsed-field ion
extraction that allows measurements with a high signal-to-noise ratio,
using ALS multibunch mode. For argon, our data gives clear evidence
that recapturing of low-energy photoelectrons following Auger decay takes
place. In contrast, our potassium data gives rise to a completely
different behavior, which is caused by correlation effects between the
4s valence electron and the ejected photoelectron. The averaged charge
states for argon and potassium are very similar far above the K-edge but
differ significantly close to the K-edge region.
To date atomic fountain clocks using laser cooled Cs atoms prove to
be the most accurate frequency standards. Among the three set-ups at
BNM-SYRTE, FO1 has recently undergone substantial changes. The cold
atom preparation has been entirely rebuilt. An optical molasses is directly
loaded from a slowed atomic beam making a magneto-optical trap
redundant. Furthermore, the lower density of the cold atom cloud reduces
inter-atomic collisions. We load typically 10 8 atoms at a temperature of
1 µK. By (111)-moving molasses the atoms are launched with ∼ 4 m/s
into the selection and interaction region. Selection of the F = 3 mF = 0
state can be carried out by adiabatic passage allowing the preparation of
100% or 50% of the atoms. This allows quantifying the collisional shift
to a precision of 10 −16 [1]. Preparation of some additional atoms in other
mF levels can lead to a strong dependence of the collisional shift on the
magnetic field even if the latter is only of the order of 1 mG. We present
measurements taken on FO2 demonstrating this Feshbach-resonance like
18
behaviour.
vergleichbarer Genauigkeit Die vorgestellte Methode reduziert verschiedene
Measurement of light shift ratios with a single trapped 138 Ba
ion, and prospects for a parity violation experiment — •Timo
Koerber — Institut für Experimentalphysik, Universität Innsbruck
This thesis describes a new scheme for observing RF transitions between
spin states in a single, trapped Ba + ion. We prepare the ion in a
selected magnetic sublevel of either the 6S1/2 ground state or the 5D3/2
metastable state. The ion is exposed to an RF field, and a spin-sensitive
version of the electron shelving method detects the resulting spin state
[1]. This scheme is applied to a precision measurement of light shifts in
Ba + : Zeeman energies are altered by a circularly polarized, off-resonant
laser, and the resulting resonance shifts are measured simultaneously in
both the 6S1/2 and 5D3/2 state. With such a measurement we determine
the ratio of P-D to S-P matrix elements with a precision of < 0.5%. A
similar technique could be employed to measure parity violation with a
single ion [2]. The observable in such an measurement is a spin-dependent
light shift, induced by a parity-violating E1 transition between the S and
D states in Ba + . The experiment and its systematic problems are analyzed
in this thesis. We also propose an alternative scheme using odd
isotopes and the E2-forbidden F = 0 ↔ F = 1 transition, along with an
initial investigation of its systematic effects.
