Interacting atoms in shallow optical lattices — •Andrey R.
of Physics, Ru-660036 Krasnoyarsk
We study the spectral and dynamical properties of cold spinless atoms
in optical lattices using the Bose-Hubbard formalism, i.e. beyond the
mean field approximation. In the case of relatively shallow lattices, where
the interaction energy is of the same order as the atomic kinetic energy,
the energy spectrum of the system is found to obey Wigner-Dyson
statistics (for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble) and, hence, it can be
considered as a quantum chaotic system. This property of ‘chaoticity’ is
shown to have a number of important physical consequences. In particular,
we consider the response of the system to a static force. Neglecting the
atom-atom interaction, this response would be periodic Bloch oscillations
of the mean atomic momentum. The atom-atom interaction profoundly
modifies these oscillations, which are now quasiperiodic in the case of a
strong static force, and decay irreversably, for a weak static force. These
two different dynamical regimes are shown to be a manifestation of an
‘order-to-chaos’ transition in the system, with the magnitude of the static
force as the control parameter.
Atom optics provides techniques for the study of periodically driven
quantum systems with highly complex dynamics on the quantum as well
as on the classical level. Recent experiments have scanned the dynamical
regimes of δ-kicked atoms, and have investigated in particular the
quantum-resonance peaks at integer multiples of the half Talbot time
[1]. These quantum resonances can be characterised with the help of a
fictitious classical limit, establishing a direct correspondence between the
nearly resonant quantum motion and the classical nonlinear resonances
of a related system [2]. A scaling law which describes the structure of
the resonant peaks is derived, and numerically demonstrated. The peak
widths show a sharp sub-Fourier behaviour in time [3]. This reflects the
high sensitivity of the quantum-chaotic δ-kicked rotor with respect to
slight variations in the detuning from resonance.
The trapping and guiding properties of atom waveguides permit an
unprecedent precision in the manipulation of cold ensembles of atoms as
well as coherent BEC samples. Nowadays, new ideas originally emerging
from the field of optics are investigated in the area of ultra-cold gases.
Here, we study the role of quantum reflections when an ultra-cold atomic
wave-packet enters and propagates inside a quasi one-dimensional atom
waveguide with a periodic structure [1,2,3]. The periodicity of the waveguide
leads to a Bloch-band energy structure and strongly modifies the
propagation of the ultra-cold atom ensemble inside the guide. One focus
of our study are the conditions for which total reflection due to quantum
interferences of the atom ensemble can be achieved and possible
applications arising from it. We also discuss the effects of the transversal
confinement within the waveguide.
Three level atom optics via the tunneling interaction — •Kai
We propose spatial analogues of the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage
(STIRAP), coherent population trapping (CPT), and electromagnetically
induced transparency (EIT) techniques as tools to coherently
and robustly manipulate external degrees of freedom of trapped neutral
atoms. These techniques are realized using the tunneling interaction between
three trapped states. We analyze the implementation in arrays of
optical microtraps and discuss possible applications.
Atomic Nanofabrication using a Nanopencil — •Martin
Müller, Mario Mützel, Dietmar Haubrich, Ulrich Rasbach,
and Dieter Meschede — Institut für Angewandte Physik der
Universität Bonn
The atomic nanopencil introduces a serial method for Atomic Nanofabrication.
It has been realized in our group for the first time at the micron
size level. The flux of a transversely laser cooled cesium beam is
spin-polarized and further enhanced with a magnetic quadrupole, which
channels the atoms onto an aperture with a diameter on the order of
hundreds of nanometers. This aperture defines the feature size of the
written structures. By moving a substrate behind the aperture, we can
create arbitrary patterns. The general scheme as well as our results will
be presented in the talk.
Atominterferometer werden heutzutage zur Präzisionsmessungen des
Photonenrückstoßes und des Absolutwerts der Gravitationsbeschleunigung
der Erde eingesetzt. In diesen Experimenten werden die Wellenpackete
in unterschiedlichen internen atomaren Zuständen präpariert,
