Das Local-Effect-Modell zur Beschreibung der biologischen
Wirkung von Ionenstrahlen — •Michael Scholz — GSI /
Biophysik, Planckstrasse 1, 64291 Darmstadt
The difference in the relative biological efficiency (RBE) of ions of
same linear energy transfer (LET) but different atomic number (Z) can
be attributed to the difference in the local ionisation distribution which
can be expressed by its radial ionisation distribution. We have started an
experimental programme at GSI to study the track structure of ions of
various Z but similar LET. The experimental system is based on a time
projection chamber with a parallel drift field, parallel-plate charge and
light amplification stages and optical readout with an intensified CCD
camera (Optical Avalanche Chamber, OPAC). The chamber is operated
with low pressure gas (4 to 40 hPa) to achieve a resolution of down to a
few tens of nm scaled to tissue density. The resolution is mainly limited
by the electron diffusion in the chamber. We present first results and a
comparison of these measurements with corresponding track structure
properties obtained by Monte Carlo simulations of Kraemer and Grosswendt.
The Heavy Ion Transport Code PHITS and Its Applications
The three dimensional heavy-ion Monte Carlo transport code PHITS
(Particle and Heavy Ion Transport Code System) is an upgrade version
of the NMTC/JAM, which is a spin-off of NMTC and has been maintained
at JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). In PHITS,
the JQMD and GEM codes are used for nucleus-nucleus interactions.
PHITS calculations have compared to experimental data [1,2] on the
production of secondary neutrons in high-energy heavy-ion reactions using
thin/thick targets and various projectiles at the HIMAC facilities
(Chiba/Japan). Good agreement was obtained for the resulting energy
spectra of secondary neutrons.
Recently the PHITS code has been applied to some heavy-ion studies
at GSI, such as a shielding calculation, the response of a BaF2 detector
to high-energy neutrons, and a magnet design for the Future project. Finally
a new concept for the code improvement/expansion by using new
models or by modifing the existing models, will be presented. [1]T. Kurosawa
In order to assure the accurate application of prescribed doses in carbon
ion radiotherapy, appropriate dosimetric methods are needed. In clinical
dosimetry it is common practice to use ionization chambers, calibrated
in absorbed dose to water in Co60 field. The dose in the carbon ion
beam is then obtained by the use of the beam quality correction factor,
as suggested by the recent International Code of Practice for dosimetry
TRS-398 of IAEA. This method is subjected to some uncertainties, connected
to the fact that an ion beam in matter produces a spectrum of
fragments due to the nuclear interactions. The major uncertainty (about
2 by the ratio of the stopping power values of ions in water relative to
air. At present in TRS-398, a constant value of 1.13 is adopted for the
stopping power ratio of ions. In order to investigate this value in detail,
Monte Carlo simulations ( SHIELD-HIT, developed by N.Sobolevsky and
P.Andreo) are used to calculate the complete spectrum of nuclear fragments
resulting from the primary ion beam in different depths. Using
these spectra and energy loss tables, the fluence weighted stopping power
ratio can be determined more accurately. In the future mentioned code
SHIELD-HIT will be used for further investigations in dosimetry.
