The Bragg condition for volume holograms in electro-optic crystals can
be controlled by applying an external electric field to the recording mate-
Q 15 Quanteneffekte I
rial, which induces change in the average refractive index of the material
via the electro-optic effect. This results in a strong electric field selectivity
and provides the possibility to record and retrieve several holograms
in the same volume of the material. This technique of Electric Field Multiplexing
can be used e.g. for optical memory systems or the electrical
control of the Transfer Function of Optical Filters. In our presentation,
we will demonstrate the switching of holographic lenses with different
focal lengths. Each hologram was recorded in LiNbO3 at an appropriate
external electric field in counterpropagating geometry. To switch on a
particular hologram, one has to merely apply the specific electric field.
The advantage of this technique is that the switching time depends just
on the resources and potentiality to apply the external electric field to
the material. According to our estimations it could be up to nanoseconds.
We will present the theory and experimental results and discuss possible
applications.
Cooperative quantum jumps for three dipole-interacting atoms
— •Volker Hannstein and Gerhard C. Hegerfeldt — Institut
für Theoretische Physik, Universität Göttingen, Tammannstr. 1, 37077
Göttingen
We investigate the effect of the dipole-dipole interaction on the quantum
jump statistics of three atoms. This is done for three-level systems
in the V and in the D configuration. The transition rates between the
four different intensity periods are calculated in closed form. Cooperative
effects are shown to increase by a factor of two compared to two of
either three-level systems. This results in transition rates that are, for
distances of about one wavelength of the strong transition, up to 100 %
higher than for independent systems. In addition, the double and triple
jump rates are calculated from the transition rates. In this case the cooperative
effects are even larger. Nevertheless, for the parameters of an
experiment with Hg + ions the effects are negligible, in agreement with
the experimental data. This seems to indicate that the large cooperative
effects observed experimentally for three Ba + ions can not be explained
by the dipole-dipole interaction.
Towards coherent coupling between two nanoparticles mediated
Whispering gallery modes (WGM) in microspheres (MS) experience
very high quality factors, allowing the storage of light in the cavity for
up to microseconds. Single nanoparticles (NP) coupled to these WGM
are promising candidates for controlled cavity-QED experiments and for
quantum information processing. We studied the coupling between two
NP via their interaction with the WGM. Coupling is mediated via pho-
91
tons which are emitted from one NP (donor) into the WGM and then
absorbed by another NP (acceptor) from the same WGM. Silica MS with
40 µm in diameter were fabricated and coated with dye-doped beads
(size: 200 nm) as acceptors. In order to position the donor at will with
nm precision in the evanescent field of the WGM, a 200 nm-diameter red
fluorescent bead, was attached to the end of a SNOM tip. After optical
excitation, fluorescence from the donor into the WGM excited the acceptor.
With a beam scanning confocal microscope, light emitted from a
single acceptor was collected and spectrally analysed. We observed energy
transfer between two NP, demonstrating the feasibility to realize
well-controllable experiments where two NP interact with each other via
the coupling to shared high-Q modes.
Pendry-Linse und Strahlungskopplung von Atomen über
makroskopische Abstände — •Jürgen Kästel und Michael
Fleischhauer — TU Kaiserslautern, Fachbereich Physik
A solid state single photon source with Si-V center in diamond
We investigate the possibility to use single silicon-vacancy (Si-V) color
centers in diamond as a single photon source. The Si-V center is a point
defect in diamond, which consists of a silicon atom and a vacancy. It
promises to generate single photons within a narrow spectral range at
room temperature efficiently. Such a light source is especially desired for
quantum cryptography.
Si-V centers were successfully produced in IIa diamond by ion implantation.
Single Si-V centers can be detected in samples with suitable ion
dose. The nonclassic property of the light from single Si-V centers is
investigated by a Hanbury-Brown-Twiss setup.
