A draft syn<strong>the</strong>sis report on <strong>the</strong> participatory variety selection (PVS) process was prepared, summariz<strong>in</strong>g groundnut<br />
variety selection trials conducted <strong>in</strong> Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal. It documents <strong>the</strong> pathways to adoption <strong>of</strong><br />
improved groundnut varieties, <strong>the</strong> lessons learned and <strong>the</strong> perspectives for enhanc<strong>in</strong>g variety adoption. Surveys were<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> Dec <strong>2006</strong> for additional <strong>in</strong>formation to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> report.<br />

MTP Output Target <strong>2006</strong>: Analysis <strong>of</strong> results from <strong>in</strong>tegrated aflatox<strong>in</strong> management options trials undertaken<br />
<strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> health related research area <strong>the</strong> WCA is pursu<strong>in</strong>g concerns <strong>of</strong> aflatox<strong>in</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> groundnut.<br />
Aflatox<strong>in</strong> is carc<strong>in</strong>ogenic and have a broad range <strong>of</strong> negative side effects on <strong>the</strong> immune system and growth and<br />
development, especially <strong>of</strong> children. While it would be useful to understand <strong>the</strong> medical ramifications better, we<br />
focus on options to reduce contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> food and feed products. <strong>The</strong> field research conducted with farmers<br />
confirms on-station results that aflatox<strong>in</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ation can be reduced significantly, down to levels that are safe for<br />
consumption for young children. Monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> marketed products also showed that quality <strong>of</strong> available products<br />
covers an enormous range, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g samples that are safe for consumption. Producer and consumer awareness <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g problem, as well as options for its improvement are extremely low, but we are start<strong>in</strong>g to tackle <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Output target 3C1: Post-harvest technologies, and resistant groundnut varieties tested with producers, and<br />
contam<strong>in</strong>ation levels monitored at <strong>the</strong> consumer end.<br />
Research results from on-farm trails test<strong>in</strong>g different options for reduc<strong>in</strong>g aflatox<strong>in</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> a range <strong>of</strong><br />
locations are all very positive, and show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> feasibility <strong>of</strong> control options. <strong>The</strong>se results need to be published, and<br />
undergo economic feasibility analysis.<br />
