2.3.3 Up-scal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> technology<br />

This technology will be up-scaled to o<strong>the</strong>r communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>of</strong> Fatick. DMP-Senegal will facilitate <strong>the</strong><br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se mis en defens <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sites and provide <strong>the</strong> necessary technical backstopp<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2.3.4 Contribution to <strong>the</strong> overall DMP project goal and objectives<br />

This technology contributes specifically to Output 1.7 on identification and enhancement <strong>of</strong> local knowledge related<br />

to <strong>the</strong> preservation and restoration <strong>of</strong> biological diversity and to Output 2 on development and implementation <strong>of</strong><br />

strategies for conservation, restoration and susta<strong>in</strong>able use <strong>of</strong> degraded agro-ecosystems.<br />

2.3.5 Projected potential impact<br />

This technology has a great potential for restor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vegetation and <strong>the</strong> socio-ecological equilibrium <strong>of</strong> biological<br />

diversity and at <strong>the</strong> same time meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> populations for forest products.<br />

2.4 Sahelian Eco-Farm (SEF)<br />

2.4.1 <strong>The</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technology’s <strong>success</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> Sahelian Eco-Farm (SEF) is an <strong>in</strong>tegrated production system for soil, water, crop and nutrient management for<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased productivity. It consists <strong>of</strong> water harvest<strong>in</strong>g techniques (half-moons), <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> high value trees such<br />

as Pomme du Sahel and Acacia colei, which provide food for human consumption, fodder and feeds for livestock<br />

and chicken, mulch to protect <strong>the</strong> soil, <strong>the</strong> rotation <strong>of</strong> cereals and legum<strong>in</strong>ous crops and various cultural practices for<br />

improved water and nutrient management.<br />

2.4.2 How is it implemented?<br />

A SEF was <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> Pelew. At present, o<strong>the</strong>r sites and farmers associations are be<strong>in</strong>g identified for <strong>the</strong><br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SEF <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fields.<br />

2.4.3 Up-scal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> technology<br />

DMP Senegal is <strong>in</strong>volved with 20 rural communities <strong>in</strong> its efforts to scale-up this technology. <strong>The</strong> local plans <strong>of</strong><br />

development serve as a basis for <strong>the</strong> scal<strong>in</strong>g-up activities. <strong>The</strong>se activities <strong>in</strong>tegrate aspects <strong>of</strong> natural resource<br />

management, livestock and socioeconomic issues. <strong>The</strong>re are various forums for <strong>in</strong>teractions and discussions with <strong>the</strong><br />

rural communities, which ensure <strong>the</strong> participation <strong>of</strong> vulnerable populations <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> activities. <strong>The</strong> management<br />

and use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural resources are decentralized.<br />

2.4.4 Contribution to <strong>the</strong> overall DMP project goals and objectives<br />

This technology contributes to <strong>the</strong> overall goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> food security and <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> rural<br />

communities. It also contributes specifically to DMP-GEF Output 4 on test<strong>in</strong>g and promotion <strong>of</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />
