9B. 1 Science <strong>in</strong> Agricultural Relief and Development Programs: Case Studies from Zimbabwe<br />
Drought is endemic <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Africa. Farmers <strong>in</strong> much <strong>of</strong> Zimbabwe, for example, experience drought once every<br />
two to three years. Households have traditionally coped by reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir food <strong>in</strong>take, sell<strong>in</strong>g animals and look<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for <strong>of</strong>f-farm employment. But <strong>the</strong> current high rates <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>flation and unemployment have now constra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>se<br />
options. Relief agencies have traditionally responded to drought by provid<strong>in</strong>g farmers with enough seed and<br />
fertilizer to enable <strong>the</strong>m to re-establish <strong>the</strong>ir cropp<strong>in</strong>g enterprises. But, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>the</strong>re are<br />
limited susta<strong>in</strong>able options for farmers to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> higher productivity levels.<br />
