trials conducted across 3 grow<strong>in</strong>g seasons <strong>in</strong> Limpopo Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, RSA.<br />

In 2005/06, Sasol Nitro, Progress Mill<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>ICRISAT</strong> embarked on a pilot study to test <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> small packs <strong>of</strong><br />

fertilizer to smallholder farmers. This <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>vestment by Sasol Nitro <strong>in</strong> register<strong>in</strong>g and packag<strong>in</strong>g starter and<br />

top-dress fertilizer <strong>in</strong> 10 and 20 kg packs, and Progress Mill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> fertilizer to about 20<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir depots operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rural villages throughout Limpopo Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. Results show that about 1500 small packs<br />

<strong>of</strong> fertilizer were sold to households. In villages where fertilizer was commonly used (Figure 9B3, Perskebult), daily<br />

records <strong>of</strong> sales show that purchase <strong>of</strong> 50kg bags were preferred, although about 20% <strong>of</strong> sales were never<strong>the</strong>less <strong>in</strong><br />

small packs. In 2 villages (Motupa and Lenyene) where fertilizer was not commonly used (Figure 9B3), almost<br />

100% <strong>of</strong> sales were as small packs. <strong>The</strong>se results are supportive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sis that small packs encourage farmer<br />

experimentation <strong>in</strong> fertilizer use. At <strong>the</strong> same time, a collaborat<strong>in</strong>g seed company, Pannar, reported that distribution<br />

<strong>of</strong> small seed packs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community based outlets <strong>in</strong>creased sales <strong>of</strong> improved seed by about 25 tonnes <strong>in</strong> 2005-06.<br />
