WCA partners tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> breed<strong>in</strong>g techniques for creat<strong>in</strong>g Gu<strong>in</strong>ea-race sorghum hybrids adapted to WCA<br />
(2007)<br />
<strong>The</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course (to be held <strong>in</strong> 2007) will address <strong>the</strong> specific need to tra<strong>in</strong> sorghum breeder and <strong>the</strong>ir technicians<br />
<strong>in</strong> methods necessary for <strong>success</strong>ful hybrid breed<strong>in</strong>g, as well as <strong>the</strong> specificities <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with photoperiodsensitive<br />
materials <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gu<strong>in</strong>ea race.<br />

At least 2 diversified gu<strong>in</strong>ea-race ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>er and restorer l<strong>in</strong>es shared with at least three NARS <strong>in</strong> WCA<br />
(2008-11)<br />
NARS have started to request hybrid parents for gu<strong>in</strong>ea races sorghums. Seed <strong>of</strong> FambeA and/or IS3534A was sent<br />
to Nigeria, Niger, Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso and Mali for <strong>in</strong>itiat<strong>in</strong>g production <strong>of</strong> experimental hybrids. <strong>The</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course may<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease this trend.<br />

Activity 3A3.2: Development <strong>of</strong> pearl millet <strong>in</strong>bred l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> West African background, and test <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
general comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ability (GCA)<br />
Milestones: At least 2 new pearl millet <strong>in</strong>bred l<strong>in</strong>es with good GCA available to NARS/year (2009-2011)<br />
We evaluated 432 testcrosses between WCA pearl millet landraces and 3 different male sterile l<strong>in</strong>es at Sadore <strong>in</strong> RS<br />
<strong>2006</strong>, to characterize fertility restoration/ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and to ga<strong>in</strong> prelim<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>formation about general comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
ability. Data entry and analysis is underway. L<strong>in</strong>es are be<strong>in</strong>g developed out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> WCA pearl millet landraces and<br />
improved cultivars, <strong>the</strong>se materials are currently at an <strong>in</strong>breed<strong>in</strong>g stage between S2 and S4 (depend<strong>in</strong>g on when<br />
<strong>in</strong>breed<strong>in</strong>g was started). A total number <strong>of</strong> 411 l<strong>in</strong>es is currently under development.<br />

Output 3B. Improved breed<strong>in</strong>g populations and open-poll<strong>in</strong>ated varieties <strong>of</strong> groundnut, sorghum and pearl<br />
millet with adaptive advantages and/or improved yields under def<strong>in</strong>ed environmental and management<br />
conditions (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g resistance to Striga) developed annually and made available to partners through<br />
regionally coord<strong>in</strong>ated, largely participatory breed<strong>in</strong>g efforts, <strong>in</strong>tegrated with natural resource management<br />
research, to meet <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> poor farmers <strong>in</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major agro-ecological zones <strong>of</strong> WCA<br />
MTP Output Targets <strong>2006</strong><br />
Partners from 4 countries tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> tools for participatory recurrent selection<br />
700 F2-F7 groundnut breed<strong>in</strong>g populations and l<strong>in</strong>es screened for enhanced multiple disease resistance <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
rosette virus<br />
While we expect hybrid breed<strong>in</strong>g to open new perspectives for cereal improvement and seed system development<br />
for West-Africa, breed<strong>in</strong>g open-poll<strong>in</strong>ated varieties <strong>of</strong> sorghum and pearl millet will cont<strong>in</strong>ue, and will be<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>tegrated with <strong>the</strong> hybrid breed<strong>in</strong>g efforts. Breed<strong>in</strong>g groundnut varieties for <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> poor farmers,<br />
specifically women farmers shall cont<strong>in</strong>ue.<br />
<strong>The</strong> variety breed<strong>in</strong>g and general crop improvement efforts are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly target<strong>in</strong>g specific needs <strong>of</strong> farmers.<br />
Thus <strong>the</strong> crop improvement efforts are address<strong>in</strong>g specific agro-ecological zones <strong>in</strong> WCA, as well as <strong>the</strong> evolv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensify<strong>in</strong>g production systems. Increas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> specificity <strong>of</strong> our plant breed<strong>in</strong>g and variety development<br />
efforts is possible only through a close partnership with national researchers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, as well as farmers, farmer<br />
