afford. Ano<strong>the</strong>r constra<strong>in</strong>t to rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> degraded lands by tree plant<strong>in</strong>g and pasture production is protection<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> land be<strong>in</strong>g reclaimed from livestock graz<strong>in</strong>g, especially if it is communally owned.<br />

• Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technologies implemented have great potential to arrest land degradation and biodiversity loss <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Desert Marg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> sub-Saharan Africa. However, larger scale up-scal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se technologies will necessitate<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g policy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> respective countries, which will be <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> thrust <strong>of</strong> project implementation <strong>in</strong> DMP<br />

Phase 3.<br />

Capacity <strong>of</strong> stakeholders and target populations enhanced (capacity build<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

Initiatives undertaken <strong>in</strong> 2005 at project sites were planned to encourage <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> (as opposed to <strong>the</strong><br />

modification <strong>of</strong>) new rural enterprise and livelihood ventures. Both Kenya and Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso have begun to promote<br />

alternative rural enterprise, by mak<strong>in</strong>g rural credit available to provide seed f<strong>in</strong>ance for new ventures, renewable<br />

sources <strong>of</strong> energy for rural <strong>in</strong>itiatives, and bus<strong>in</strong>ess development support for new enterprises. In Senegal activities<br />

focused on <strong>the</strong> domestication <strong>of</strong> wild fruit, for commercialization.<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> last year a range <strong>of</strong> capacity build<strong>in</strong>g activities have been undertaken with DMP stakeholders. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

needs were first assessed and prioritized <strong>in</strong> order to tailor tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities to users’ needs. For example, ICRAF is<br />

f<strong>in</strong>aliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir report on a workshop entitled ‘Agr<strong>of</strong>orestry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sahel: present status, needs and perspectives’<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g which tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g needs were identified <strong>in</strong> close consultation with <strong>the</strong> major players <strong>in</strong> West and Central Africa.<br />

CIRAD has circulated a survey questionnaire to all DMP partners ask<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong>ir tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g needs <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong><br />

capacity/governance build<strong>in</strong>g for Natural Resource Management. <strong>The</strong> focus will be on environmental, socioeconomic<br />

and policy evaluation. This will streng<strong>the</strong>n local capacity for evaluat<strong>in</strong>g NRM options and policies, and<br />

for devis<strong>in</strong>g policy scenarios. This would also streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> capacity <strong>of</strong> NARS scientists to estimate <strong>the</strong> economic<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> a given technology and f<strong>in</strong>e-tune <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terventions accord<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce Phase II focused on technology dissem<strong>in</strong>ation, TSBF-CIAT/AfNET, <strong>in</strong> collaboration with DMP, organized a<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workshop to create awareness and develop researchers’ skills <strong>in</strong> farmer-participatory research and scal<strong>in</strong>gup<br />

<strong>of</strong> promis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novations. DMP partners from Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso, Kenya, Niger, Senegal, South Africa and Zimbabwe<br />

attended. Partners from Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso, Kenya, Niger and Senegal also participated <strong>in</strong> a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workshop on<br />

‘Assess<strong>in</strong>g crop production, nutrient management, climatic risk and environmental susta<strong>in</strong>ability with simulation<br />

models’. <strong>The</strong>y familiarized <strong>the</strong>mselves with DSSAT (Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer), a<br />

comprehensive computer model for <strong>the</strong> simulation <strong>of</strong> crop growth and yield and plant water, nutrient and carbon<br />

dynamics. IFDC organized a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workshop for 350 pilot-farmers and 50 national extension agents from Burk<strong>in</strong>a<br />

Faso on large-scale dissem<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> Integrated Soil Fertility Management technologies. Ano<strong>the</strong>r IFDC workshop on<br />

‘CASE’ and technical options for cropland forage production was attended by 50 participants <strong>in</strong> Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso.<br />

CASE promotes commodity cha<strong>in</strong> development and <strong>the</strong> agro-<strong>in</strong>put sector. DMP-Niger scientists took part <strong>in</strong> a<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course on monitor<strong>in</strong>g and impact studies <strong>of</strong> projects <strong>in</strong> Segou, Mali.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> postgraduate tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, students from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Niamey worked on <strong>the</strong>ir MSc <strong>the</strong>ses on<br />

documentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous knowledge <strong>of</strong> livestock genetic diversity <strong>in</strong> south-western Niger under <strong>the</strong> supervision<br />

<strong>of</strong> DMP-ILRI scientists.<br />

DMP has also undertaken <strong>in</strong>-country and cross-country tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities. Scientists from South Africa attended a<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g workshop <strong>in</strong> Namibia, organized by <strong>the</strong> DMP-Namibia. <strong>The</strong>y acquired hands-on experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> FIRM<br />

(Forum for Integrated Resource Management) and <strong>the</strong> Local Level Monitor<strong>in</strong>g (LLM) programs that are used by <strong>the</strong><br />

DMP <strong>in</strong> Namibia. A PhD student from DMP South Africa visited Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso, Mali, Niger and Senegal to<br />

document and evaluate restoration and NRM technologies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se countries. DMP South Africa also supported<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and capacity build<strong>in</strong>g workshops for farmers and <strong>the</strong> youth <strong>of</strong> formerly disadvantaged schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mier<br />

target area <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kahalari. In addition small livestock breed<strong>in</strong>g and management tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses were given to<br />

farmers and land users <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mier region. DMP South Africa has developed a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g manual for production <strong>of</strong><br />

organic Rooibos <strong>seedl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong>. Through tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (technical and <strong>in</strong>stitution-build<strong>in</strong>g) at grassroots level, <strong>the</strong> capacity <strong>of</strong><br />

resource users and service providers to susta<strong>in</strong>ably manage <strong>the</strong>ir natural resources was enhanced. In Mali several<br />

women were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> tree graft<strong>in</strong>g and management <strong>of</strong> nurseries. In Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso, 48 farmers from 15 villages <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong> Banh were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> graft<strong>in</strong>g and production <strong>of</strong> Pomme du Sahel” and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> drip<br />

irrigation. In Senegal producers were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> techniques <strong>of</strong> graft<strong>in</strong>g Ziziphus mauritania. In Niger, tourist<br />
