microbial ecology.<br />

<strong>ICRISAT</strong> carried out a number <strong>of</strong> field tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year. A nursery-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course was held at <strong>ICRISAT</strong>,<br />

Sadore for 36 farmers from Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso, Mali and Niger. A course on modern production techniques <strong>of</strong> fruit trees<br />

was given to 30 producers <strong>in</strong> Bobo Dioulasso, Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso. A course on multiplication and storage <strong>of</strong> vegetable<br />

seeds was given to 40 practitioners from <strong>the</strong> DMP countries <strong>in</strong> West Africa. Four tree-graft<strong>in</strong>g courses with<br />

emphasis on <strong>the</strong> graft<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Pomme du Sahel plants were given to 120 farmers. About 400 farmers from Burk<strong>in</strong>a<br />

Faso, Ghana, Senegal, Gambia, Gu<strong>in</strong>ea Bissau, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Chad were tra<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>in</strong>stallation,<br />

operation and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> African Market Gardens. Forty farmers from Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso and Ghana participated <strong>in</strong><br />

a two-day course on <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sahelian Eco-Farm. Three scientists from DMP-Kenya were<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ed at Sadore for a period <strong>of</strong> three months on tree graft<strong>in</strong>g, African Market Garden, and o<strong>the</strong>r relevant<br />

technologies.<br />

Contributions to <strong>the</strong> National Action Plans <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UNCCD <strong>in</strong> SSA.<br />

In West and Central Africa (WCA), efforts were made by DMP partners to document exit<strong>in</strong>g policies, through<br />

literature review and secondary data collection. In general, policy guidel<strong>in</strong>es follow <strong>the</strong> general framework <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

decentralization process that is be<strong>in</strong>g implemented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> four countries. More authority is be<strong>in</strong>g given to local and<br />

communal structures <strong>in</strong> manag<strong>in</strong>g natural resources<br />

In East and Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Africa (ESA) a series <strong>of</strong> studies were <strong>in</strong>itiated with country partners, illustrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong><br />

different environmental and agricultural policies <strong>in</strong> various cross border locations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ESA region us<strong>in</strong>g remote<br />

sens<strong>in</strong>g techniques. This work will cont<strong>in</strong>ue and also be <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> country level policy debate. With partners<br />

<strong>in</strong> west Africa this work may be extended to <strong>in</strong>clude similar analysis <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Sound policy <strong>in</strong>terventions/guidel<strong>in</strong>es for susta<strong>in</strong>able resource use formulated, adopted and implemented<br />

(policy and legal framework)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Kenya government is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g a policy for <strong>the</strong> Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASALs). Various<br />

consultative meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> which members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DMP have participated have been held. <strong>The</strong> National Policy for<br />

Development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ASAL areas <strong>of</strong> Kenya was prepared <strong>in</strong> 1992 and <strong>the</strong> government <strong>in</strong> collaboration with UNDP is<br />

currently updat<strong>in</strong>g and review<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> document. Discussions have been held between stakeholders; and an expert<br />

workshop and two regional workshops have been held and <strong>the</strong> output <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> a draft national policy <strong>in</strong> Dec<br />

2003. <strong>The</strong> document has been forwarded to <strong>the</strong> Kenya government for ratification and implementation. A second<br />

policy document known as <strong>the</strong> Soil Fertility Initiative for Kenya has been prepared. Discussions have been held<br />

between stakeholders; several expert workshops have been held and <strong>the</strong> output <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> a draft national<br />

policy.<br />
