In <strong>the</strong> advanced Spanish type trial <strong>in</strong> 2005/06, 12 l<strong>in</strong>es significantly out-yielded (pod yield 4.6 - 5.6 ± 0.52 t ha -1 ) <strong>the</strong><br />

best control ICGS 11 (4.0 t ha -1 pod yield). <strong>The</strong> best entry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trial was ICGV 04115 (5.6 t<br />

ha -1 pod yield, 68% shell<strong>in</strong>g outturn, and 50.4% oil), followed by ICGV 04124 (5.5 t ha -1 , 69%, and 47.6%). In <strong>the</strong><br />

advanced Virg<strong>in</strong>ia type trial 14 entries produced significantly higher pod yield (4.3 - 5.5 ± 0.60 t ha -1 ) than <strong>the</strong> best<br />

control ICGS 76 (3.7 t ha -1 ). ICGV 04140 (5.5 t ha -1 pod yield) and ICGV 04139 (5.5 t ha -1 ) were <strong>the</strong> best entries <strong>in</strong><br />

this trial. However, <strong>the</strong> former had higher 100-seed weight, and <strong>the</strong> latter higher oil content.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Spanish elite variety trial, all 7 test l<strong>in</strong>es outperformed (3.7 - 4.8 ± 0.18 t ha -1 pod yield) <strong>the</strong> highest yield<strong>in</strong>g<br />

control ICGV 95058 (2.5 t ha -1 pod yield) dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>2006</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season. <strong>The</strong> best entry ICGV 04124 (4.8 t ha -1 )<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ated from <strong>the</strong> cross (ICGV 92069 x ICGV 93184) x ICGV 98105. In <strong>the</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia elite variety trial, three l<strong>in</strong>es;<br />

ICGV 04149 (4.9 t ha -1 ), ICGV 04140 (4.6 t ha -1 ), and ICGV 04139 (4.6 t ha -1 ), out-yielded <strong>the</strong> control, ICGV<br />

86325 (2.7 ± 0.43 t ha -1 ). <strong>The</strong> best entry came from (ICGV 92069 x ICGV 93184) x ICGV 99171 cross. In ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Virg<strong>in</strong>ia elite variety trial (conducted with <strong>the</strong> material transferred from short-duration trials), all 22 l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

significantly out-yielded (3.8-3.1 ± 0.43 t ha -1 ) <strong>the</strong> best control ICGS 76 (2.5 t ha -1 ). Seven medium-duration l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

were selected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2005/<strong>2006</strong> post-ra<strong>in</strong>y season for <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational trials.<br />

Confectionery types: One hundred and sixty-two advanced breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g controls) were evaluated <strong>in</strong><br />

n<strong>in</strong>e replicated yield trials under high <strong>in</strong>put conditions dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2005/<strong>2006</strong> post-ra<strong>in</strong>y and <strong>the</strong> <strong>2006</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y seasons.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> 2005/06 post-ra<strong>in</strong>y season, none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> test entries out-yielded <strong>the</strong> best control <strong>in</strong> any trial. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>2006</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y<br />

season, 6 l<strong>in</strong>es (3.5 - 2.7 ± 0.16 t ha -1 pod yield; 57 - 66% shell<strong>in</strong>g outturn; and 48 - 56 g 100-seed weight) outyielded<br />

<strong>the</strong> best control ICGV 99085 (2.3 t ha -1 ; 65% shell<strong>in</strong>g out-turn; and 42 g 100 seed weight). <strong>The</strong> best entry<br />

ICGV 05176 (3.5 t ha -1 ; 57% shell<strong>in</strong>g outturn; 49 g 100 seed weight) came from ((ICGV 88414 x USA 63) x ICGV<br />

95172) x ICGV 00440) cross. In ano<strong>the</strong>r advanced trial (Virg<strong>in</strong>ia), 2 l<strong>in</strong>es, ICGV 05198 (3.1 t ha -1 ) and ICGV 05200<br />

(3.1 t ha -1 ) outperformed <strong>the</strong> highest yield<strong>in</strong>g control ICGV 00440 (2.6t ha -1 ). <strong>The</strong> best entry came from ((BPI Pn 9 x<br />

ICGV 95172) x ICGV 88414) x (USA 63 x ICGV 95172)).<br />

Short-duration: We evaluated 385 l<strong>in</strong>es (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g controls) <strong>in</strong> 14 replicated trials and 192 advanced breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

<strong>in</strong> 4 augmented trials for <strong>the</strong>ir yield and o<strong>the</strong>r agronomic traits under irrigated conditions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2005 ra<strong>in</strong>y and <strong>the</strong><br />

2005/<strong>2006</strong> post-ra<strong>in</strong>y seasons. <strong>The</strong> Spanish trials were harvested when <strong>the</strong> crop accumulated 1470 °Cd (equivalent<br />

to 90 DAS <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season) and <strong>the</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia and large-seeded trials when <strong>the</strong> crop accumulated 1705 °Cd<br />

(equivalent to 105 DAS <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season) at <strong>ICRISAT</strong> Center, Patancheru, India.<br />

None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es out-yielded <strong>the</strong> best control <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> eight replicated yield trials <strong>in</strong> 2005/<strong>2006</strong> postra<strong>in</strong>y<br />

season. In ano<strong>the</strong>r trial, 45 elite entries, orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g from different series <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational short-duration<br />

groundnut varietal trial (ISGVT) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past 10 years, and o<strong>the</strong>r elite trials, were evaluated with 4 controls <strong>in</strong> a 7 x 7<br />

lattice design. Thirteen entries out-yielded (3.4-3.9 ± 0.36 t ha -1 pod yield) <strong>the</strong> highest yield<strong>in</strong>g early-matur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

control J 11 (3.0 t ha -1 pod yield). ICGV 00308 (3.9 t ha -1 pod yield), ICGV 97243 (3.8 t ha -1 ), and ICGV 00338 (3.7<br />

t ha -1 ) were <strong>the</strong> most promis<strong>in</strong>g. ICGV 97243 belonged to <strong>the</strong> IX series, and ICGV 00308 to <strong>the</strong> X series <strong>of</strong> ISGVT<br />

and ICGV 00338 to elite trial.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Spanish elite varietal trial, 6 l<strong>in</strong>es significantly out-yielded (1.8 - 1.4 ± 0.12 t ha -1 pod yield) <strong>the</strong> highest<br />

yield<strong>in</strong>g control, Chico (1.1 t ha -1 pod yield) <strong>in</strong> <strong>2006</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season. ICGV 03211 (1.8 t ha -1 ), <strong>the</strong> best entry among <strong>the</strong><br />

6 l<strong>in</strong>es, came from (ICGV 98191 x ICGV 93382) cross. In ano<strong>the</strong>r Spanish elite varietal trial, 6 l<strong>in</strong>es (2.4 - 2.0 ±<br />

0.13 t ha -1 pod yield) produced significantly higher pod yield than <strong>the</strong> highest yield<strong>in</strong>g control ICGV 91114 (1.8 t ha -<br />

1 ). ICGV 02038 (2.4 t ha -1 ), <strong>the</strong> best entry among <strong>the</strong> 6 l<strong>in</strong>es, came from (ICGV 95244 x ICGV 92206) cross. Two<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es (ICGV 02022 and ICGV 02144) were identified for <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational trials dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2005/<strong>2006</strong><br />

post-ra<strong>in</strong>y season.<br />

On station evaluation <strong>of</strong> groundnut genotypes for LLS: Ten advanced breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es were supplied to scientists at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Agriculture Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. <strong>The</strong>se l<strong>in</strong>es were planted dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2005 ra<strong>in</strong>y<br />

season at UAS, Hebbal Campus, Bangalore, along with <strong>the</strong> susceptible check TMV 2 to evaluate <strong>the</strong>ir resistance<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st LLS. <strong>The</strong> test genotypes were evaluated for disease severity at 15 day <strong>in</strong>tervals and <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al scores are<br />

presented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Table 2. Six genotypes (ICGV 01270, ICGV 00005, ICGV 00064, ICGV 01276, ICGV 87846, and<br />

ICGV 00068) showed good level <strong>of</strong> resistance. All <strong>the</strong> ten genotypes are be<strong>in</strong>g evaluated dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>2006</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y<br />
