Milestone B.3.1.1: Germplasm accessions <strong>of</strong> small millets with limited seed stock/viability regenerated and seed<br />

samples processed to for medium- and long-term conservation (HDU, Annual)<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year, we regenerated 127 critical accessions <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ger millet (15), foxtail millet (46), barnyard millet<br />

(42), little millet (2), proso millet (17), and kodo millet (5) for conservation and distribution. We also<br />

regenerated 20 accessions <strong>of</strong> six small millets <strong>in</strong> which seeds stocks are below critical levels under glasshouse<br />

conditions. 1500 accessions <strong>of</strong> two small millet crops (f<strong>in</strong>ger millet and foxtail millet) while grown essentially<br />

for evaluation were also used for replenish<strong>in</strong>g stocks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> active collections.<br />

Milestone B.4.1.1: Requested germplasm <strong>of</strong> small millets distributed to bona fide users for utilization<br />

(RPT/HDU/NBPGR, Annual)<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>2006</strong> we distributed a total <strong>of</strong> 1125 samples <strong>of</strong> small millets germplasm (f<strong>in</strong>ger millet-1038; foxtail<br />

millet-25; proso millet-17; little millet-15; kodo millet-15; and barnyard millet-15) for utilization to scientists <strong>in</strong><br />

three countries <strong>in</strong> 15 consignments. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> special requests <strong>in</strong>clude sets <strong>of</strong> germplasm for collaborative<br />

evaluation with NARS <strong>in</strong> India and o<strong>the</strong>r countries. <strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ger millet germplasm distribution <strong>in</strong>cludes 1000<br />

accessions <strong>of</strong> composite set along with three controls for evaluation at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University,<br />

Coimbatore, India.<br />

Additionally, we provided 127 samples <strong>of</strong> germplasm for <strong>in</strong>ternal utilization. <strong>The</strong> total <strong>in</strong>cludes, f<strong>in</strong>ger millet-<br />

15; foxtail millet-46; proso millet-17; little millet-2; kodo millet-5; and barnyard millet-42.<br />

Unrestricted access to and movement <strong>of</strong> staple crop germplasm ensured: Crop researchers need to have<br />

access to diverse germplasm to develop improved broad genetic based cultivars; and to susta<strong>in</strong> biodiversity for<br />

current and future generations. A number <strong>of</strong> our NARS partners regularly request for materials <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong><br />

repatriated landraces germplasm, new breed<strong>in</strong>g materials, and f<strong>in</strong>ished and semi-f<strong>in</strong>ished products as well as<br />

nucleus seed <strong>of</strong> released varieties and hybrid parents for different uses. A total <strong>of</strong> 553 samples <strong>of</strong> 369 f<strong>in</strong>ger<br />

millet accessions were provided to Tanzania and Malawi and Sudan. <strong>The</strong> recipient organizations signed MTAs<br />

and <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>cluded NARIs, Universities, Seed Companies and NGOs for research as well as for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

multiplication. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand we received from <strong>ICRISAT</strong> Patancheru, a total <strong>of</strong> 441 sorghum and 11 pearl<br />

millet accessions from Zimbabwe<br />

Milestone B.4.1.2: Requested germplasm <strong>of</strong> small millets exported for utilization and new germplasm imported<br />

for conservation after seed health evaluation and clearance through NBPGR (RPT/HDU/NBPGR, Annual)<br />

Export <strong>of</strong> small millets: A total <strong>of</strong> 17 small millets (foxtail millet 8 and f<strong>in</strong>ger millet 9) were exported to<br />

Botswana (7 samples) and Sudan (10 samples).<br />
