promoted.<br />
Impact: In India, <strong>the</strong> survey <strong>of</strong> 307 farmers <strong>in</strong> six states <strong>of</strong> Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Orissa,<br />
Jharkhand and West Bengal <strong>in</strong>dicates that 60% <strong>of</strong> farmers had <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>the</strong> area under chickpea as a result <strong>of</strong><br />
RRC[REF128] <strong>in</strong>itiatives. Seventy percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> farmers reported that chickpea cultivation was highly pr<strong>of</strong>itable<br />
and that <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>come had <strong>in</strong>creased. <strong>The</strong> benefit: cost ratio for chickpea cultivation was estimated to about 5.5.<br />
Seventy-four percent farmers felt that chickpea cultivation had improved <strong>the</strong> fertility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soil and 43% said<br />
chickpea cultivation generates substantial additional employment. More than two thirds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chickpea growers<br />
used <strong>the</strong> additional <strong>in</strong>come to fur<strong>the</strong>r improve <strong>the</strong>ir farm<strong>in</strong>g enterprise and to educate <strong>the</strong>ir children.<br />
In Nepal, <strong>the</strong> project brought many positive improvements to <strong>the</strong> natural resource base. [REF129]For example, <strong>the</strong>re<br />
has been a considerable reduction <strong>in</strong> cattle dung burn<strong>in</strong>g, associated improvements <strong>in</strong> soil fertility and a more<br />
efficient utilization <strong>of</strong> family and womens’ labor dur<strong>in</strong>g slack seasons. Gra<strong>in</strong> legume sales have <strong>in</strong>creased by 220%,<br />
whilst household consumption <strong>of</strong> vegetables and gra<strong>in</strong> legume dal also <strong>in</strong>creased. Over 70% <strong>of</strong> direct participants<br />
and over 40% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>direct participant farmers reported positive improvement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir access to technological<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation. <strong>The</strong> project also streng<strong>the</strong>ned social capital, e.g. a significant number <strong>of</strong> farmers’ groups have been<br />
established and streng<strong>the</strong>ned and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m have been organized <strong>in</strong>to co-operatives for activities such as seed<br />
production and market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> chickpea, rice, mungbean, and also establish<strong>in</strong>g multipurpose agr<strong>of</strong>orestry nurseries.<br />
Up to two-thirds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rice fallow areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> farmers sampled have been brought under w<strong>in</strong>ter and spr<strong>in</strong>g crops<br />
and cropp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tensity has <strong>in</strong>creased up to 205%. Rice, mungbean and chickpea were <strong>the</strong> three most important<br />
crops, and over 50% <strong>of</strong> participants adopted new varieties and cultivation <strong>of</strong> mungbean <strong>in</strong>creased by more than 60%<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>al ra<strong>in</strong>fed areas <strong>of</strong> project districts.<br />
More than 60% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> direct participants and around 40% <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>direct participants have adopted low cost,<br />
environmentally friendly, resource augment<strong>in</strong>g, management technologies and practices, such as seed prim<strong>in</strong>g, cow<br />
ur<strong>in</strong>e sprays, <strong>in</strong>tegrated pest management (IPM), <strong>in</strong>tegrated plant nutrient systems (IPNS), m<strong>in</strong>imum tillage,<br />
improved compost mak<strong>in</strong>g, and multipurpose tree species on <strong>the</strong>ir farms.<br />
In Bangladesh, it was calculated that ra<strong>in</strong>fed chickpea had <strong>the</strong> lowest costs but <strong>the</strong> highest benefit: cost ratio (1 : 2.6)<br />
<strong>of</strong> any comparable rabi crop, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g irrigated boro rice although net returns per <strong>the</strong> latter crop were higher (but<br />
required greater <strong>in</strong>vestment). Households <strong>in</strong> RRC-project areas consumed 30% more chickpeas than o<strong>the</strong>r, nonproject<br />
households and chickpea growers reported that <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>comes had <strong>in</strong>creased.<br />
Adoption <strong>of</strong> earlier matur<strong>in</strong>g rice varieties has <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>the</strong> productivity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rice-based systems <strong>in</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
three countries by mak<strong>in</strong>g available extra time for o<strong>the</strong>r operations, lower cost <strong>of</strong> production, reduced use <strong>of</strong> water<br />
and nutrients besides, <strong>in</strong> some cases, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g cropp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tensity.<br />
Current status: Estimates are that over 11000 households <strong>in</strong> more than 400 villages <strong>in</strong> India, more than 300 villages<br />
<strong>in</strong> four districts <strong>of</strong> Bangladesh and 30000 households <strong>in</strong> Nepal are currently us<strong>in</strong>g elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technologies<br />
developed dur<strong>in</strong>g this work. Promotion is be<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued by <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al NGO partners (CRS, PROVA,<br />
FORWARD) <strong>in</strong> all three countries to <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir abilities without external fund<strong>in</strong>g. For example, <strong>in</strong> India, CRS<br />
is committed to an ambitious plan <strong>of</strong> expansion <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technology <strong>in</strong> nearly 900 villages dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>2006</strong>-07 season. <strong>The</strong> Chattisgarh state government, follow<strong>in</strong>g a jo<strong>in</strong>t workshop <strong>in</strong> Raipur with CRS and <strong>the</strong><br />
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) also plans its own promotion program <strong>in</strong> <strong>2006</strong>-<br />
