experience and <strong>in</strong>sights by turn<strong>in</strong>g some exist<strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>in</strong>to RLOs.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was a brief discussion review<strong>in</strong>g what we need to take <strong>in</strong>to account now, which may be relevant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

Specific areas highlighted <strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

• Ontologies<br />

• Trends <strong>in</strong> ODL towards greater use <strong>of</strong><br />

• Reusable content<br />

• Mobile technologies<br />

• Blogs and wikis<br />

• Greater use <strong>of</strong> multimedia, and delivery approaches such as podcast<strong>in</strong>g and video cast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

A concern highlighted was <strong>the</strong> likelihood that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> medium term <strong>the</strong>re is likely to be even greater diversity <strong>in</strong> terms<br />

<strong>of</strong> what technologies students <strong>in</strong> developed/develop<strong>in</strong>g and rural/urban areas can access. However <strong>the</strong> overall trend<br />

is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g scope for an e-learn<strong>in</strong>g and m-learn<strong>in</strong>g approaches, and as mobile technologies and <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />

improve, RLOs may become widely accessible.<br />

Content Management Workshops with NGO/CBO’s:<br />

Two workshops were organized <strong>in</strong> collaboration with <strong>the</strong> India Mission 2007 Alliance dur<strong>in</strong>g September<br />

(Pondicherry) and October (Gujarat) <strong>2006</strong>. <strong>The</strong> participatnts were from large NGO’s and media organizations with<br />

India-wide presence. In each workshop, about 30 participants jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>, represent<strong>in</strong>g about 10 organizations. <strong>The</strong><br />

focus was on demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g a content management platform and <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> RLO’s through such a platform. <strong>The</strong><br />

materials developed on <strong>the</strong> VASAT project were used as substrates <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se exercises. Based on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mission 2007 Alliance, a significant amount <strong>of</strong> VASAT material has been translated <strong>in</strong>to Tamil (spoken by about 70<br />

million people) for render<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to learn<strong>in</strong>g objects for localization and re-use. Two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se partners subsequently<br />

were <strong>in</strong>vited to <strong>the</strong> CSO-CGIAR forum dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> CGIAR annual general meet<strong>in</strong>g (Wash<strong>in</strong>gton DC, December<br />

<strong>2006</strong>) where <strong>the</strong>y presented <strong>the</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se workshops.<br />
