<strong>ICRISAT</strong> has been work<strong>in</strong>g with government, NGOs and <strong>the</strong> donor community to test more susta<strong>in</strong>able farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

strategies that will <strong>in</strong>crease food production levels even under drought conditions. For years, we sought to develop<br />

more drought tolerant varieties <strong>of</strong> sorghum, pearl millet and groundnut. But <strong>the</strong>se <strong>of</strong>fered only limited ga<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

productivity. More recently, <strong>ICRISAT</strong> and its partners have been test<strong>in</strong>g strategies to susta<strong>in</strong>able improve crop<br />

productivity. <strong>The</strong>se encompass two major components – <strong>the</strong> precision application <strong>of</strong> small doses <strong>of</strong> nitrogen-based<br />

fertilizer and <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> plant<strong>in</strong>g bas<strong>in</strong>s, which concentrate limited water and nutrient resources to <strong>the</strong> plant.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se simple technologies have <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>the</strong> average yields be<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong>ed by more than 200,000 farm households<br />

by at least 30% s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004 (Figure 9B4). Ra<strong>the</strong>r than simply hand<strong>in</strong>g free <strong>in</strong>puts to farmers, this strategy teaches<br />

farmers how to apply <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>puts most efficiently. <strong>The</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>put use efficiency provides higher and more<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able productivity ga<strong>in</strong>s necessary to achieve food security <strong>in</strong> drought prone farm<strong>in</strong>g systems, and provide<br />

<strong>in</strong>centives for <strong>the</strong> private sector to develop <strong>in</strong>put supply channels.<br />
