A total <strong>of</strong> 11,971 accessions have been conserved as safety duplicate at <strong>the</strong> Niamey genebank <strong>in</strong> <strong>2006</strong> (<strong>2006</strong><br />

groundnut, 5205 pearl millet and 4580 f<strong>in</strong>ger millet accessions).<br />

Activity A.6.4: Upgrade an ESA regional short-term seed storage facility <strong>in</strong> Kiboko<br />

Milestone A.6.4.1: Short-term seed storage facility renovated and modules purchased and <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />

A storage room for germplasm has been completed at Kiboko for process<strong>in</strong>g germplasm for medium term<br />

storage. A seed dry<strong>in</strong>g room has also been completed and a dryer <strong>in</strong>stalled for dry<strong>in</strong>g seed for medium term<br />

storage. <strong>The</strong> medium term storage facility <strong>in</strong> Nairobi has been equipped with plastic trays (crates) for hold<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bottles conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g germplasm accessions. This will facilitate easy arrangement and trac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> germplasm <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

facility. Purchased a cool<strong>in</strong>g system and <strong>in</strong>stalled at <strong>the</strong> Kiboko short-term storage facility and <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

materials are currently stored. This was done with funds contributed by two special projects – <strong>The</strong> ABS and <strong>the</strong><br />

SCOSA projects.<br />

Regeneration <strong>of</strong> critical accessions for medium and long-term storage cont<strong>in</strong>ues and new and additional<br />

germplasm identified for regeneration <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• 529 African f<strong>in</strong>ger millet were conserved after first year <strong>of</strong> characterization<br />

• 1081sorghum, 144 pigeonpea and 36 chickpea accessions rejuvenated <strong>in</strong> 2005 have been processed and<br />

stored<br />

• Established 100 pigeonpea accessions as work<strong>in</strong>g collection<br />

• 500 accessions <strong>of</strong> sorghum core collection evaluated<br />

• 1060 sorghum accessions <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those received form Zimbabwe and also photoperiod sensitive<br />

materials from Tanzania were rejuvenated and processed<br />

• 382 pearl millet accessions were rejuvenated<br />
