B. Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> context<br />

Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso is seriously affected by land degradation and desertification. Every year, thousands <strong>of</strong> hectares <strong>of</strong><br />

woodlands disappear due to clearance, bush fires, excessive cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> wood, overgraz<strong>in</strong>g and lopp<strong>in</strong>g. Land<br />

degradation, caused by water and w<strong>in</strong>d erosion, renders lands unfertile. <strong>The</strong> arable lands have reduced significantly<br />

due to land degradation. This has fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>creased poverty <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural areas. DMP-GEF project <strong>the</strong>refore aims to<br />

combat land degradation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert marg<strong>in</strong>s areas (ra<strong>in</strong>y season 100 to 600 mm) through participatory research<br />

and <strong>the</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutional capacity. Specific objectives are to develop strategies to arrest land<br />

degradation, reduce soil erosion and <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> biodiversity.<br />

2. Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technology/strategy<br />

2.1 Management <strong>of</strong> degraded lands us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> delph<strong>in</strong>o plow, half-moons and seed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

This technology <strong>of</strong> land rehabilitation is based on <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> delph<strong>in</strong>o plow, which constructs half-moons that are<br />

spaced 5 m apart. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dry season seeds <strong>of</strong> herbaceous plants and shrubs are transported by <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d and<br />

collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se half-moons. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y season, <strong>the</strong> half-moons collect run<strong>of</strong>f and thus enhance water<br />

<strong>in</strong>filtration and storage. This water is made available to <strong>the</strong> trees, grasses and shrubs seeds and <strong>seedl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> <strong>the</strong>reby<br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir growth. <strong>The</strong> half-moons are constructed follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> convex l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> curves. Rehabilitation <strong>of</strong><br />

degraded lands was done <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sites <strong>of</strong> DMP Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso and o<strong>the</strong>r research/development projects, namely Banh,<br />

Tougouri, Katchari and Oursi. <strong>The</strong> work was carried out ei<strong>the</strong>r at <strong>the</strong> village or household level.<br />

2.1.1 <strong>The</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technology’s <strong>success</strong><br />

To achieve <strong>the</strong> rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> degraded lands <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g conditions have to be met:<br />

• Favorable Harmattan w<strong>in</strong>ds carry<strong>in</strong>g seeds <strong>of</strong> herbaceous plants and shrubs <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> half-moons. <strong>The</strong>se half-moons<br />

are built <strong>in</strong> such a way that <strong>the</strong>y can collect and reta<strong>in</strong> seeds, store water and reduce run <strong>of</strong>f. It is also advisable to<br />

do some seed<strong>in</strong>g and tree plant<strong>in</strong>g under certa<strong>in</strong> conditions.<br />

• Based on <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> DMP work <strong>in</strong> Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso, it was observed that <strong>the</strong>re should a m<strong>in</strong>imum amount <strong>of</strong><br />

ra<strong>in</strong>fall for <strong>the</strong> <strong>success</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> activity. For example, <strong>the</strong> results from <strong>the</strong> Banh site were not as good as those from<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sites due to low ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>in</strong> 2005.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> managed lands must be protected aga<strong>in</strong>st graz<strong>in</strong>g animals. <strong>The</strong>re should be no graz<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>se lands that are<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g rehabilitated for one to two years depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> sites to ensure that <strong>the</strong> grasses and shrubs <strong>seedl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> are<br />

well established. In this regard <strong>the</strong> DMP team has conducted a series <strong>of</strong> awareness campaigns <strong>of</strong> rural<br />
