Capacity build<strong>in</strong>g and knowledge exchange: Eight researchers from different countries (Ch<strong>in</strong>a - 2,<br />
India - 1, Nepal - 1, Philipp<strong>in</strong>es - 2, and Vietnam - 1) were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> groundnut breed<strong>in</strong>g and seed production<br />
technologies. Queries related to different aspects <strong>of</strong> groundnut cultivation from farmers and students were attended<br />
to on various occasions. One CD on ICGV 91114 <strong>in</strong> Anantapur district was prepared and <strong>in</strong>formation shared.<br />
International trials and advanced breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es: We supplied trait-specific 20 sets <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational trials and 144<br />
advanced breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es and segregat<strong>in</strong>g populations to collaborators <strong>in</strong> Afghanistan, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Eritrea, India, Nepal,<br />
Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia.<br />
Variety releases/ likely releases by <strong>the</strong> NARS<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>a: Groundnut variety Huayn 23 was released for cultivation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shandong prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. It is derived<br />
from ICGS 37. Huayn 23 produced 13.5% more pod yield over <strong>the</strong> local control Luhua 12 at 22 locations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
prov<strong>in</strong>ce.<br />
India: <strong>The</strong> Chief M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong> Andhra Pradesh, India, Dr. Y. S Rajashekhar Reddy, <strong>in</strong> a special function at <strong>ICRISAT</strong>,<br />
Patancheru, dedicated <strong>the</strong> drought-tolerant, early-matur<strong>in</strong>g, high-yield<strong>in</strong>g variety ICGV 91114 to Anantapur<br />
farmers. This variety was tested <strong>in</strong> farmer-participatory varietal selection trials for four consecutive years <strong>in</strong> drought<br />
prone locations <strong>in</strong> Anantapur, <strong>the</strong> largest groundnut grow<strong>in</strong>g district <strong>in</strong> India. Farmers liked <strong>the</strong> variety and accepted<br />
it as a possible replacement <strong>of</strong> a six-decade old variety TMV 2. This variety was released formally on 2 June <strong>2006</strong><br />
by <strong>the</strong> State Varietal Release Committee <strong>of</strong> Andhra Pradesh.<br />
ICGV 89290 - a Spanish variety with tolerance to foliar diseases and <strong>in</strong>sect pests, has been identified by <strong>the</strong> All<br />
India Coord<strong>in</strong>ated Research Program on Groundnut (AICRP-GN) for its release <strong>in</strong> Zone II, compris<strong>in</strong>g Gujarat and<br />
Rajasthan states <strong>of</strong> India. This variety is already released as SG 99 for spr<strong>in</strong>g season cultivation <strong>in</strong> Punjab state <strong>of</strong><br />
India.<br />
ICGV 92195 - a short-duration groundnut variety, has been proposed by Maharana Pratap University <strong>of</strong> Agriculture<br />
and Technology, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, was released by <strong>the</strong> Central Varietal Release Committee as ‘Pratap<br />
Mungphali–2’ for zone II (Rajasthan and Gujarat) <strong>in</strong> India.<br />
ICGV 93468 - a short-duration variety, is proposed for release as ‘Avtar’ <strong>in</strong> Uttar Pradesh, India for spr<strong>in</strong>g season<br />
cultivation. <strong>The</strong> variety is already popular with <strong>the</strong> farmers and was cultivated on 59,000 ha dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2005 spr<strong>in</strong>g<br />
season.<br />
AK 303 - a confectionery variety,, selected from an F 4 population ((ICGV 88384 x JL 24) x (ICGV 88438 x ICG<br />
5240)), has been proposed by Mahatma Phule Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Jalgaon, for release <strong>in</strong> Maharashtra, India.<br />
