4. Once the MRI is complete, the reports will be faxed to the referring physician and the
Athletic Training Staff. After the report has been sent to the Certified/Licensed Athletic
Trainer, he/she will make the follow-up appointment with the referring physician.
Second Opinion Policy
POLICY STATEMENT: The Department of Athletic Training is ultimately
responsible for the overall care of each and every student-athlete and must be
informed of all conditions in order to provide the most appropriate, efficient, and safe
care.
1. If a student-athlete is not satisfied with his/her injury diagnosis or treatment he/she
should notify a staff Athletic Trainer or the team physician.
2. The Athletic Training Staff at the direction of the UNCW team physician will
make arrangements for outside treatment. Student-athletes will not be denied access
to outside medical treatment.
3. The physician providing the second opinion will need to send all office notes and a
letter stating his/her medical opinion on the student-athletes playing status.
4. The team physician for the university will then look at these documents and give
the final clearance.
5. The team physician for the university will make the final decision on any athletes
return to play following a second opinion being obtained by the athlete.
6. The athletic department shall not assume financial responsibility for outside
medical services that were not arranged by the team physician or a full time staff
Athletic Trainer.
7. The Department of Athletic Training will reimburse the student-athlete’s medical
bills obtained as a direct result of the referred opinion upon the presentation of a
claim statement. No reimbursement will be provided for any travel expenses, meals
or other purchases associated with such a referral.
