UNCW ATHLETIC COUNCIL MISSION STATEMENT
The Chancellor’s Faculty Athletic Council is comprised of at least six faculty members
who do not hold administrative appointments above the rank of department chair, plus the
Faculty Representative. The Athletic Council reports directly to the Chancellor in an
advisory capacity on issues involving the administration of intercollegiate athletics at
UNCW. The Chancellor charges the Faculty Athletic Council to:
a. Represent the views of the faculty regarding intercollegiate athletics among
faculty members and other members of the community.
b. Maintain strict adherence to academic standards at UNCW, the Colonial Athletic
Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. This responsibility
includes reviewing the academic progress of student-athletes.
c. Review annually the policies and conduct of intercollegiate athletics at UNCW to
insure compliance with current and pending NCAA regulations involving Title IX
and issues of gender equity.
d. Be available ad hoc to address athletic issues or problems that might arise and to
serve on hearing committees or appeals as requested for scholarship issues,
transfer releases, grievance matters and any other concerns as well.
e. Represent the faculty on hiring committees for coaches and athletic
administrators.
f. Review with Director of Athletics and Faculty Athletic Representative relevant
legislative proposals.
g. Represent the faculty interest in matters of athletic scheduling, current facility use
and future facility plans.
