I. In situations where thunder and/or lightning may or may not be present, yet
someone feels his/her hair stand on end and skin tingle, LIGHTNING IS
IMMINENT! Therefore, all persons should assume the “lightning-safe”
position as described above.
J. Cordless or cellular phones are a safe alternative to land-line phones, if the
person and the antenna are located within a safe structure or location, and if
all other precautions are followed.
K. If UNCW administration has cancelled classes at the university due to severe
weather, the UNCW Department of Athletics strongly recommends the
cancellation of all games, practices, and other activities.
L. All individuals should have the right to leave a site or activity, without fear of
repercussion or penalty, in order to seek a safe structure or location if they feel
that they are in danger from impending lightning activity.
M. The following are designated safe structures for each on-campus venue:
a. Natatorium (Pool)- Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving
Locker Rooms
b. Soccer Field- Hanover Gymnasium, Trask Coliseum, Almkuist-Nixon
Sports Medicine Building
c. Brooks (Baseball) Field- UNCW Baseball Field house or Bus of
visiting team
d. Boseman (Softball) Field - Hanover Gymnasium, Trask Coliseum,
Almkuist-Nixon Sports Medicine Building
e. Green Track and Field- Hanover Gymnasium, Trask Coliseum,
Almkuist-Nixon Sports Medicine Building
f. Tennis Courts- Hanover Gymnasium, Trask Coliseum, Almkuist-
Nixon Sports Medicine Building
III.
Criteria for Safe Return to the Practice/Game Area-
The decision to return to a UNCW athletic activity after a period of evacuation will
be made by a member of the UNCW Athletic Training Staff present at a practice or
the UNCW Game Administrator / Event Management member present at a game in
consultation with UNCW Athletics Facilities & Operations Staff, UNCW Athletic
Training personnel, the head coach and/or his/her designee, and game officials.
