Any reduction or cancellation of aid during the period of award is permissible only if such
action is taken for proper cause by the regular disciplinary or financial aid authorities of the
institution and the student-athlete has been provided written notice of an opportunity for a
hearing.
Renewals and Nonrenewals of Athletic Scholarships
The renewal of institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability shall be
made on or before July 1 prior to the academic year in which it is to be effective. The
institution shall promptly notify in writing each student‐athlete who received an award the
previous academic year and who has eligibility remaining in the sport in which financial aid
was awarded the previous year whether the grant has been renewed or not renewed for the
ensuing academic year. Notification of financial aid renewals and nonrenewals are approved
and prepared by the Financial Aid Office.
Hearing Opportunity Required:
If the institution decides not to renew or decides to reduce financial aid for the ensuring
academic year, the institution shall inform the student‐athlete in writing that he or she, upon
request, shall be provided a hearing before the Financial Aid Appeals Committee. The
decision to renew or not renew the financial aid is left to the discretion of the Financial Aid
Committee, to be determined in accordance with its normal practices for students generally.
Reconsideration of Nonrenewal
It is permissible for the institution that has notified a student‐athlete that he or she will not be
provided institutional financial aid for the next academic year subsequently to award
financial aid to that student-athlete.
Fifth-Year Scholarships
Department of Athletics does not automatically grant fifth‐year athletic scholarships.
Whether a student‐athlete is still completing their undergraduate degree, completing a second
major, has eligibility remaining or has athletic scholarship eligibility remaining should not be
presumed reasons by the student‐athlete that a fifth‐year scholarship will be granted. The
Department of Athletics will review requests for consideration of a fifth‐year athletic
scholarship by the student‐athlete. The student-athlete must complete the application for a
“Fifth‐Year Scholarship Request” form with all attachments and signatures affixed to be
turned in to the Director of Compliance by April 1 of that academic year.
To be eligible for consideration, the student‐athlete must:
meet the criteria for fifth‐year assistance per NCAA regulations;
present valid reasoning for the fifth‐year assistance request;
have supporting documentation from the head coach for the request; and
have evidence of academic progress made the academic year(s)
