EMERGENCY PLAN FOR SPECTATORS Purpose The purpose of an Emergency Action Plan is to have a clear understanding between athletic administrators, coaches, Certified/Licensed Athletic Trainers, Athletic Training Students, team physicians, team managers, and any other staff that may be present at athletic competitions where spectators are allowed regarding the following issues: - Athletic Personnel Responsibilities - Medical Emergencies - Storm Danger Policies This plan should be implemented throughout the year, during traditional and non-traditional seasons. Athletic Staff Responsibilities Certified/Licensed Athletic Trainers - Respond to potential emergency situations regarding spectators if designated as the first-aid response person - Will communicate with campus police personnel and facilities representative regarding the severity and necessity of advanced emergency medical care when Necessary - Responsible for direct supervision of Athletic Training Students - Will be Licensed by the state of North Carolina to administer Athletic Training services - Will be able to implement emergency action plan and inclement weather policy Athletic Training Students - Will communicate with campus police personnel and facilities representative regarding the severity and necessity of advanced emergency medical care when necessary - Respond to potential emergency situations regarding spectators if designated as the first-aid Response person - Will work under the direct supervision of certified/licensed athletic trainers 62
- Will be certified in First Aid and CPR - Will be able to implement emergency action plan and inclement weather policy in the absence of certified/licensed athletic trainer IX. INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR ATHLETIC INJURIES INSURANCE-PRIMARY/SECONDARY The University of North Carolina Wilmington carries an Athletic Accident Insurance Policy on all intercollegiate student-athletes. The University’s insurance policy is SECONDARY COVERAGE, and the policy of the parent/guardian and/or the individual athlete is the PRIMARY COVERAGE. The Athletic Department will assume (to the limit of the athletic insurance policy as Secondary Payor) the financial responsibility for the payment of expenses incurred for the examination, treatment, or hospitalization of a student-athlete injured while participating in a formal practice session, an authorized intercollegiate contest or traveling to and from such a contest by authorized transportation. Any other circumstances under which injuries or illness occur are regarded as non-athletic in nature and are not the responsibility of the UNCW Athletic Department; nor is it legal under NCAA regulations to assume any such responsibility. A letter is sent from the Director of Athletics to the parent/guardian and student-athlete at the beginning of the fall semester explaining the insurance coverage and process for filing claims. Insurance Information forms are enclosed with the letter which must be completed and returned to the Athletic Office in order for the Secondary Insurance to be filed. If no primary insurance exists the Athletic Accident Insurance assumes primary coverage. When student-athletes are referred by the Sports Medicine Staff for treatment at an off-campus facility, the student-athlete should give the facility their primary insurance information for billing and inform them that UNCW Athletics has SECONDARY COVERAGE and that a bill and Explanation of Benefits (EOB) should be filed with the Athletic Insurance Coordinator to cover any balance. Failure of the student-athlete and their parents to follow procedures specified by their insurance carrier and the Athletic Accident Policy may result in denial of benefits. DENTAL CARE The Department of Athletics is not responsible for payment of normal dental care or dental problems. In the event of an injury to a student-athlete while participating in formal practice or competition, which involves dental repairs, the student-athlete’s Primary Insurance will be filed first and the secondary insurance will be filed to cover any balance. The Athletic Accident Insurance Policy covers only dental work sustained from an athletic injury which results in damage to his/her natural teeth. 63
