UNCW student-athlete that requests one. The Department of Athletic Training recognizes that student-athletes that are currently undergoing dental or orthodontic care will be better suited for mouth-formed mouthguards, rather than custom formed mouthguards due to ongoing dental corrections. The Department of Athletic Training also recognizes that individual student-athletes may prefer mouth formed mouthguards over the custom formed mouthguards. The Sports medicine staff will attempt to educate these individuals on the benefits of a custom formed mouthguard over a mouth formed mouthguard for optimal dental protection. MANAGEMENT OF DENTAL INJURIES: The following guidelines are recommended by the American Dental Association for emergency dental care following the traumatic loss of a tooth or teeth during athletic participation 1. Attempt to locate lost tooth or teeth 2. If dirty gently rinse off, then attempt to reimplant in patients mouth. 3. If unable to reimplant then place, in milk, saline or commercial dental emergency kit. 4. Refer for emergency dental care as soon as possible. SUMMARY: The Department of Athletic Training is committed to providing quality health care services for all student-athletes. As such, the Department of Athletic Training is very proactive in the management of dental care and the issuing of athletic mouthguards to individual student-athletes who are at an increased risk for dental injuries with their respective athletic teams. The issuing of mouthguards aid us in limiting the risks of dental injuries associated with athletics, and the potential for long-term complications from dental injuries. 268
Nutritional Services Policy POLICY STATEMENT: The Sports Medicine Staff recognizes the need for nutritional counsel and education for student athletes. Therefore, student athletes who desire or need this service are referred to the University Nutritionist. The Sports Medicine Staff recognize that they are not nutritionist or dieticians, although possess a basic knowledge of this area. Therefore, they will refer beyond their scope of knowledge, however for basic nutritional questions or daily intake analysis, they are available for counsel. Eating and Exercise Disorders POLICY STATEMENT: The Sports Medicine Staff believes in a multidisciplinary team approach for students with disordered eating and exercise behaviors. The goal is to provide students with an on-campus resource to give them what they need in terms of education, evaluation, and support as they deal with and recover from issues of disordered eating and exercise behavior. This team includes individuals from the Counseling Center, Student Health Center, University Nutrition, and Athletics. A fulltime staff athletic trainer represents the Athletics Department and contributes to the recovery plan for student athletes with disordered eating and exercise behaviors. He/she also facilitates arrangements for the appropriate medical evaluation, nutritional consultation, and psychological assessment of the student athlete. SECTION IX TRANSPORTATION POLICIES University Vehicle Use Policy POLICY STATEMENT: Only sports medicine staff who hold a valid driver’s license and have been given permission to operate a UNCW owned vehicle are allowed to use such vehicles for any sports medicine related functions. When using Athletic Department vehicles, staff are expected to follow all motor vehicle and driving laws applicable for the State of North Carolina. Pedestrian safety should be a priority at all times when operating a vehicle. Vehicles are to always be parked in appropriate locations and used for sports medicine services only. Fueling Directions: The Department of Athletic Training has the use of one van and one golf cart. These should be refueled weekly as part of the athletic training students’ cleaning duties, or when the tank reaches ¼ full. Take the vehicle to the maintenance 269
