POSITION DESCRIPTIONS
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
JOB DESCRIPTION: Directs and supervises the administration of the men and
women’s athletic programs and all administrative, operational and business functions of
the Department of Athletics in accordance with the policies and procedures established
by the Athletic Council and approved by the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees.
Understands that compliance is a central element of employment and is responsible for
adhering to NCAA, CAA and institutional rules and regulations. Oversees the
compliance of all aspects of the athletic programs with university, conference and NCAA
rules and regulations and adheres to and understands the importance of rules compliance.
Supervise scheduling of intercollegiate athletic events.
Plans, develops and consults with the Athletic Council those specific policies,
procedures, programs and methods designed to implement the general athletic philosophy
and policies of the university to be approved by the Chancellor. Coordinate with the
Faculty Athletics Representative in representing the university at conference and NCAA
meetings. Assists with conducting student-athlete exit interviews.
Sets forth the department’s funding requirements, and supervises the overall management
and control of the approved fiscal year operating budget for all men and women’s
intercollegiate sports.
Recruits and provides for the selection, organization and supervision of the staff, and
delegate specific responsibilities to assure efficient and productive operation of
administrative, business, fiscal and athletic activities of the department.
Organizes, directs and participates in activities that will promote the prestige of the
University of North Carolina Wilmington and the Department of Athletics. Strive to
enhance relationships and communications with all parties (individuals, groups and
organizations) who either directly or indirectly have some association with or interest in
the operation and success of the Department of Athletics. Serves on committees that
vitally concern athletics. Maintains an effective liaison with athletic department staffs
across the country. Oversees public relations, speaks to civic groups, attends seminars
