-vision therapy (e.g. contact lenses, eyeglasses)
-off-campus counseling
-expendable academic course supplies; and
-essential items
-family emergencies
The Department of Athletics has the authority to approve or not approve any requests for use
of this fund and student-athletes should make only valid requests. There is a limited amount
of funds available and student-athletes should make prompt requests to the Department of
Athletics. The Financial Aid Office will be notified of the student-athletes’ request for
assistance and will be the final authority for approving or not approving the request based on
the student-athlete’s financial need and the current amount of financial aid awarded.
XIV. DRUG EDUCATION, TESTING & COUNSELING PROGRAMS
The Department of Athletics does not condone any use of illegal or improper substances by
its student-athletes and staff, and student-athletes are expected to refrain from using any,
including those listed as NCAA banned substances. “The UNCW Drug Education, Screening
and Counseling Program for Student-Athlete” is a departmental policy and is included in the
appendix.
As mandated by the University of North Carolina General Administration, student-athletes
are required to attend drug education programs, participate in drug testing, and have access to
counseling services. The “UNCW Drug Education, Screening and Counseling Program for
Student-Athletes” document is reviewed and distributed to each student-athlete for signature
consenting to the program. To be a student-athlete, voluntary willingness to participate in the
drug education, testing, and counseling program is required. A current listing of NCAA
banned substances is included in the document and student-athletes must be knowledgeable
of the consequences for a positive drug test result either by the university or the NCAA.
Ignorance is not an excuse!
If a student-athlete does not attend drug education programs or does not cooperate with drug
testing, eligibility will be jeopardized. The consequences for noncompliance with the
program or a positive drug test result are provided in the document. If a student-athlete is
suspended or removed from the athletic program for failure to comply with the policy, a
notification letter will be sent to the student-athlete. An opportunity for a hearing will be
granted, if requested.
