BASIC FUNCTION: To ensure the health and safety of UNCW’s 350 varsity sports
athletes, clinical education of the athletic training students, education of coaches and
athletes, coordinate medical referrals with the team physician, administration of policy
and procedure specific to the sports medicine facilities, maintain injury documentation
and oversee the sports medicine facilities.
POLICY MAKING AND/OR INTERPRETATION: There is joint responsibility for
the athletic trainers in setting policies for the sports medicine facilities, consistent with
the university and Department of Athletics’ policies, OSHA regulations, National
Athletic Trainers Association laws/by-laws/code of conduct and ethics and NCAA rules
and regulations.
PROGRAM DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT: There is joint responsibility for
the program direction and development of the sports medicine facilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: These positions are held by professionals who need
little or no supervision. They work with a team physician and are under the supervision
of the Director of Sports Medicine.
LEVEL OF PUBLIC CONTACT: As part of the Department of Athletics, there are
interactions with parents, fans, Seahawk Club donors, and the community.
STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONFIDENTIAL DATA: Studentathlete
information that is medical or personal in nature.
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITON: This position works in cooperation
with the department’s student-athlete injury insurance coordinator to insure that injury
reports are completed to facilitate filing claims.
PREFERRED ABILITIES: Certified athletic trainer, Master’s Degree.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Head Coach provides leadership for an NCAA Division I
program and is responsible for the overall coaching, management and administration of
the program, to include evaluating and recruiting with athletic scholarships, supervising
