Mouthguard/Dental Emergency Policy
PURPOSE: The following policy on athletic dental mouthpieces, emergency dental
care, assessment, and management, and return to play guidelines has been developed in
accordance with the University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Athletic
Training’s Mission Statement to provide quality healthcare services and assure the wellbeing
of each student-athlete at UNCW.
POLICY STATEMENT: The University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of
Athletic Training recognizes that sport induced dental injuries pose a significant health
risk for those student-athletes participating in athletics at The University of North
Carolina Wilmington. The Department also recognizes that the wearing of athletic dental
mouthguards is mandated and enforced by the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) in NCAA sanctioned athletic competitions for teams that the NCAA has deemed
as having increased risks for athletic dental injuries. With this in mind, the Department
of Athletic Training has implemented policies and procedures to assess and identify those
student-athletes who are at an increased risk for suffering a dental injury during practice
or competition. Any University of North Carolina Wilmington student-athlete who
suffers a dental injury from a practice or competition will be referred to the appropriate
dental specialist for an evaluation. This physical examination, and/or further diagnostic
testing will be used in conjunction in determining when it is safe for a student athlete to
return to competition.
DENTAL INJURY DEFINITION:
Any significant injury to a tooth, teeth, or mouth of the student-athlete that warrants
emergency follow-up care with a dental professional will be considered a dental injury.
