III. CATASTROPHIC INCIDENT GUIDELINE GOALS
The following action plan will appropriately apply steps to manage a catastrophic
incident. While applying these steps, UNCW Athletic Department Personnel will
keep in mind the following goals:
A. Accurately and expeditiously gather all pertinent facts regarding the
incident
B. Accurately document all events, especially list all participants and
witnesses
C. Secure any or all available materials/equipment involved
D. Respect the dignity of the individuals involved
E. Immediately communicate within the CIMT
F. Only members of the CIMT, or individuals they designate, are to speak
about the incident to family members, media, or other staff members,
student-athletes or coaches. No one else has clearance to speak about
the incident.
G. Instruct student-athletes not to speak to anyone regarding the incident
H. Handle any communication with the media through the Sports Information
Office and/or the University Spokesperson. All information deemed
appropriate for release to the media will be determined by the Catastrophic
Incident Management Team.
IV. CHAIN OF COMMAND AND AREAS OF ACTION
After being informed of a catastrophic incident, the following individuals should be
notified to commence their responsibilities:
A. During UNCW Athletic Department participation/travel: Director of
Athletic Training or Director of Athletics
B. During non-UNCW Athletic Department activities: Director of
Athletics
