I. ATHLETIC STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Introduction to Policies and Procedures Manual
The Department of Athletics at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, through its
broad program of sports, provides an opportunity for men and women student-athletes to
compete at the highest level of competition available in collegiate athletics. The scope
and level of competition for each individual sport in the program is governed by
conference affiliation and designation, revenue production, prominence at the national,
regional, or local level, facilities and appropriateness to this geographical region. Every
sport is encouraged to provide the greatest opportunity possible to student-athletes to
pursue excellence within the resource limitations of the state, university and department.
Within the limits of university policy, membership on athletic teams shall be determined
on the basis of skill and any other factors deemed necessary.
Student-athletes must meet NCAA, CAA, institution, and University of North Carolina
System rules and regulations to be an eligible member of a UNCW sport program.
This manual includes basic policy and procedure for the conduct of the Department of
Athletics. These guidelines are published for compliance by personnel of the Department
of Athletics. Deviations from the expressed policies and procedures are not authorized. A
number of these procedures must be channeled through several offices and approval for
requests that deviate from expressed policy may not be available at the last minute.
Requests may be denied if proper procedure has not been followed.
As inevitable changes are made in policies or procedures, every effort will be made to
keep personnel informed and the manual updated. Any changes to policies and
procedures will be immediately active regardless if they are updated in the manual.
The codes of the NCAA, CAA and any additional conference affiliations have not been
included in the manual. It is understood that as members of these associations, we will
abide by their rules and regulations.
Every coach will be responsible for compliance with all aspects of NCAA, CAA and
university rules and regulations. Additionally, rules compliance is a central element in each
individuals’ job description and adherence to rules and regulations is an expectation of each
individual. Failure, by any individual, to comply with these rules and regulations could
jeopardize that individual’s employment at UNCW.
