Athletic Council
The Athletic Council is involved in policy and budget decisions concerning the Department
of Athletics. The Council meets monthly to evaluate athletic competition schedules and the
number of missed classes due to travel and competition; to review student‐athletes’ grades,
academic concerns, and student-athlete well being issues; and to be consulted on the athletic
budget, athletic plans for the future and approve, if necessary, any athletic decisions.
The Athletic Council reports directly to the Chancellor in an advisory capacity on issues
involving the administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Chancellor charges the Athletic
Council to:
Represent the views of the faculty regarding intercollegiate athletics among faculty
members and other members of the community.
Maintain strict adherence to academic standards at UNCW, the CAA and the NCAA.
This responsibility includes review of the academic progress of student‐athletes.
Review annually the policies and conduct of intercollegiate athletics at UNCW to
ensure compliance with current and pending NCAA regulations involving Title IX
and issues of gender equity, women and minority opportunities, sportsmanship, and
student‐athlete welfare issues.
Be available ad hoc to address athletic issues or problems that might arise, and serve
as a hearing committee at the Chancellor’s request.
Represent the faculty on hiring committees for coaches and athletic administrators.
Review with the Director of Athletics and Faculty Athletic Representative relevant
legislative proposals.
Represent the faculty interest in matters of athletic scheduling, current facility use and
future facility plans.
Senior Exit Interviews
The senior exit interview is a resource and survey for the Department of Athletics to gain
insight and knowledge into the student‐athletes’ athletic experience at UNCW. Additionally,
it is an avenue for the student‐athlete to voluntarily share information about their personal
athletic experience both orally and in writing. Student‐athletes, who have exhausted
eligibility or are graduating, complete an online survey to evaluate their sports program, the
Department of Athletics and their overall experience. Separate oral interviews are also
conducted with the student‐athletes. The results are summarized and shared in a meeting
between the Director of Athletics, Faculty Athletics Representative and the Deputy Director
of Athletics. This information assists the Department of Athletics in learning about the
