surface is covered with a tangle of v<strong>in</strong>e-leaves. Aga<strong>in</strong>st these is seen<br />

a nude Bacchant, who bounds along with stream<strong>in</strong>g hair : she holds<br />

a thyrsos <strong>in</strong> her left hand, and with her right pours the contents of a<br />

horn or rhytoii <strong>in</strong>to her mouth. Beh<strong>in</strong>d her flies a w<strong>in</strong>ged Cupid, vv^ho<br />

with his right hand steadies a basket of grapes on his head, and <strong>in</strong> his<br />

left carries some <strong>in</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>ct object: beneath his feet is a small quadruped<br />

(rabbit?) nibbl<strong>in</strong>g a grape-bunch. When first discovered, this relief<br />

was <strong>in</strong> better condition and showed other animals half-hidden <strong>in</strong> the<br />

v<strong>in</strong>e-shoots. F. Cumont th<strong>in</strong>lcs it certa<strong>in</strong> that the drum and the<br />

Viergotterste<strong>in</strong> found on the same site {stipra p. 67 ff. fig. -27) belong to<br />

one monument, and F. Hertle<strong>in</strong> [op. cit. p. 84) regards the comb<strong>in</strong>a-<br />

tion as possible.<br />
