Chthonia, and Eros\ but <strong>in</strong> a passage of profound significance<br />

declared 'that <strong>Zeus</strong> had transformed himself <strong>in</strong>to Eros, when about<br />

to create' the world^. The cosmogonic Eros, as G. F. Schoemann^<br />

called him, figures also <strong>in</strong> Orphic literature both early and late*:<br />

the Rhapsodies represent ' delightsome Eros ' as conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> and<br />

issu<strong>in</strong>g from ' ' the great body of <strong>Zeus</strong>' ; \\i& Hymns make '<br />

Eros<br />

' a<br />

synonym of 'Bakcheus,' whom they <strong>in</strong>voke as 'Sire of the gods and<br />

Son"'—a manifest echo of the old Thracian creed".<br />
