personage can hardly be other than Azizos, whom lambhchos<br />

compared with Ares. If so, he was one, and the more important<br />

one, of the Edessan Tw<strong>in</strong>s. The identification is borne out by the<br />

fact that coppers of Edessa struck by Alexander Severus and lulia<br />

Mamaea (fig. 336)\show a somewhat similar little figure stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on the turreted crown of the goddess <strong>in</strong> the attitude of a fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

giant and probably <strong>in</strong>tended for the constellation Orion-, whose<br />

position <strong>in</strong> the starry sky is contiguous to that of the Tw<strong>in</strong>s<br />

Whether Azizos and Monimos were, as R. Dussaud* supposes,<br />

parallel forms aris<strong>in</strong>g from the duplication of a s<strong>in</strong>gle god or rather,<br />

as F. Cumont^ suggests, orig<strong>in</strong>ally dist<strong>in</strong>ct div<strong>in</strong>ities on their way<br />

towards ultimate fusion, we cannot with the data at our disposal<br />

'the figure of a div<strong>in</strong>ity on a column' is hardly less so. G. Macdonald <strong>in</strong> the Hunter<br />

Cat. Co<strong>in</strong>s locc. cilt. hazards 'statue (of Aquarius?)' and is followed by Head Hist,<br />
