lorica, pahidamentiim : his left hand held the re<strong>in</strong>s, his right was raised. The crouch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

figure gr<strong>in</strong>s with open mouth : his left hand held the left forefoot of the horse ; his right<br />

probably grasped a club (a suitable fragment was found), on which rested the right hoof<br />

of the horse.<br />

The rider wears a close-fitt<strong>in</strong>g jacket, which has a seam on the right side and reaches to<br />

his hips (edge visible <strong>in</strong> good light) ; whether it was sleeved or not is uncerta<strong>in</strong>. His belt<br />

has a round disk at the back. His left hand held the re<strong>in</strong>s; his right, connected with his<br />

head by a clumsy support, probably held a thunderbolt, not a spear (see F. Hertle<strong>in</strong><br />

op. cit. p. 32). The horse has a saddle with pommels, back, saddle-cloth, etc. The<br />

crouch<strong>in</strong>g figure, a young and beardless male, bears the weight on his hunched shoulders.<br />

This group was found together with a Viergdtterste<strong>in</strong> and other fragments <strong>in</strong> the same<br />

sandstone of a 'Jupiter-column' (F. Hettner <strong>in</strong> the Korrespondenzblatt der Westdeittschen<br />

Zeitschrift 1891 x. 75 ff., id. Die roniischen Sleitidenkmdler des Prov<strong>in</strong>zialmiiseums zu<br />

Trier Trier 1893 p. 18 ff. nos. 27— 30, Haug <strong>in</strong> the Westdeutsche Zeitschrift 1891 x. 136<br />

no. 159 Ehrang, F. Hertle<strong>in</strong> op. cit. pp. 21, 94, 95),<br />

difference <strong>in</strong> style— it may have belonged.<br />
