spurious*. It is commonly<br />

held that the dicephalous god<br />

of Volaterrae was lanus— a<br />

view strongly advocated by<br />

W. Deecke' ; but the absence<br />

of a beard and the presence of<br />

a petasos po<strong>in</strong>t rather to the<br />

justice of W. H. Roscher's®<br />

suspicion that we should here<br />

recognise, not lanus, but Her-<br />

mes.<br />

On the whole I <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>e to<br />

the conclusion that all these<br />

double-faced deities Hermes '^' ^^°'<br />

the 'Pillar '-god (?)^ among them—-were orig<strong>in</strong>ally local varieties<br />
