His title Matut<strong>in</strong>us^ too acquires fresh po<strong>in</strong>t, and we can appreciate<br />

to the full the l<strong>in</strong>es of Horace :<br />

Sire of the morn<strong>in</strong>g (do I call thee right,<br />

Or hear'st thou Janus' name with more delight?)<br />

Who <strong>in</strong>troducest, so the gods orda<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Life's various tasks, <strong>in</strong>augurate my stra<strong>in</strong>^<br />

Moreover, the Roman conception of lanus thus falls <strong>in</strong>to l<strong>in</strong>e with<br />

that of the Etruscans, who, as Varro admits^ took him to be the<br />

sky pure and simple. F<strong>in</strong>ally, this view of lanus is borne out by'<br />

the most probable etymology of his name. Correspond<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

the phrase : the liv<strong>in</strong>g abode of all celestial be<strong>in</strong>gs might well be termed divum dens.<br />
