wishes of the worshipper would come true. The connexion between<br />

the axe and the burnt jet is not <strong>in</strong>dicated and leaves room for con-<br />

jecture^. J. Dalechamps^ <strong>in</strong> 1587 said that the jet was placed on a<br />

red-hot hatchet—an assertion roundly rebuked by Salmasius* as<br />

of the Society of Biblical Archceology 1898 xx. 140— 144 argues that Austanou, Ostani<br />

was, to beg<strong>in</strong> with, one of the cynocephalous deities form<strong>in</strong>g the ogdoad of Hermopolis,<br />

that he was subsequently confounded with Thoth, that he acquired importance dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Ptolemaic period, and that Ostanes the god then gave rise to Ostanes the priest of<br />

Memphis, who accord<strong>in</strong>g to Hermetic tradition <strong>in</strong>itiated Demokritos of Abdera <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
